SECTION A- PLAYS/DRAMA

1. A PLAY OF GOGGLE EYES – Anne Fine

Gerald did some things that annoyed Kitty. In an essay form, discuss at least thirteen points to support this. [25]

  • He did not behave like a guest, i.e. he knew where everything was
  • He was always switching off unnecessary lights
  • He intruded and criticized Kitty’s room
  • He was against payment for Kitty’s potatoes
  • He was not interested in saving the planet campaigns.
  • He told/ordered Mum what to wear.
  • He denied the kids time with their mother.
  • He called Jude and Mum by their full names.
  • He always goggled at Mum.
  • He gave them orders
  • He always took Mum away and Mum was no longer able to attend meetings with Kitty.
  • He divided the family, i.e. He paid more attention to Jude than Kitty.
  • He complained about the bus ride and the “battle songs”
  • He criticized the demonstrators for being late.

SECTION B- NOVELS

  1. CITY KIDS – Merle-Anne Braithwaite

a. Who are the three boys involved in the story? (3)Daniel, Themba and Khanyisa

b. How did these boys meet? (2)Daniel saved Khanyisa from fighting with an older boy, and met Themba when Khanyisa took him to where they stay.

c. Mention the name of the white boy's mother. (1)Helen (Riley)

d. How did the white boy's father die? (1)He fell from the scaffolding while extending the farm.

e. Explain what happened to the black boys' parents. (2)1-The mother died in township violence (IT DOES NOT SAY SHE BURNED IN THE HOUSE FIRE!!)

2-The father is unreachable because he was away working in the mines.

f. Where were the black boys living? (1)Under the wild banana plant, on the streets, Durban, etc. *Accept reasonable answers*

g. Why didn't the two black boys go to social welfare? (1)They did not want to be separated.

h. Why didn't they want to go to a shelter? (1)Themba did not want Khanyisa to be influenced badly by the older boys.

i. In which two ways did many street kids get their food? (2)rubbish bins, stealing

j. Where did the white boy learn Zulu? (1)On his farm the workers spoke Zulu.

k. Where does the white boy work? (1)At the Showcase Theatre

l. Which musical instrument did the elder black boy play well? (1)mouth organ

m. Who is the director of the theater? (1)Martin

n. “Jean has invited us for lunch tomorrow.... You go Mom. I have lots of work to catch up on.”

(i) What work did the boy have to do? (1)school work/ homework

(ii) On that particular night whom did the white boy meet on the street? (2)He saw a man in a black leather jacket threatening a girl.

o. What did the white boy lend the elder black boy on audition day? Why? (2)Daniel lent Themba clothes to wear because Themba’s were too shabby to wear.

p. What job did the elder black brother get? (1)a dancer in the theater

q. What accident did the white boy have? (1)He was shocked by electricity.
