CLASSROOM STANDARDS

In order to provide a classroom environment that encourages optimum learning opportunities for all students, the teacher expects them to follow these behavior standards:

1. Be seated, quiet, and ready to work when the bell rings.

2. Come to class prepared with books, writing materials, and assignments.

3. Follow all teacher directions the first time they are given.

4. If you wish to speak while the teacher is instructing, ask for permission at an appropriate time by raising your hand.

5. The use of cell phones or electronic devices is not allowed (except for electronic readers).Cell phones must be turned OFF.

6. Please do not use perfume/cologne, fragrant lotions, etc. in the classroom.

7. Speak respectfully to the teacher and other students.

8. Wait for the teacher to dismiss you before leaving the classroom.

If student can't comply with these standards, the teacher will:

a. Remind student.

b. Have teacher-student conference.

c. Notify parent.

d. Refer student to GLC (grade level coordinator) for disciplinary action.

HELP KEEP THE CLASS CLEAN AND ORDERLY

1. Do not eat, drink, or chew gum in class. (Bottled water is allowed)

2. Keep your desk clean.

3. Return to their proper place dictionaries, books, or any other classroom materials.

LATE WORK, ABSENCES, AND MAKE-UP WORK

1. No late work will be accepted for daily assignments.

2. Absence from class or school is not considered an excuse for not turning in work on time. If you cannot be in class the day assignment is due, drop off work in my mailbox or submit via email.

3. Students who have excused absences may arrange to make up some assignments. The student is responsible for arranging all make-up work:

a. For tests or special instructions, arrange to see the teacher Wednesdays at lunch, before or after class.

b. Generally, a student should turn in make-up work within the number of days he/she has been absent. If absent for three days, for example, the student should turn in work within three days. Exceptions should be cleared with the teacher.

4. Some assignments (such as in-class reading, group work, daily quizzes, video notes) cannot be made-up.

GRADES

Activities, tests, and assignments turned in will be awarded points. Generally ten points represents one hour's worth of work. However, tests and compositions will be worth more points than daily class work/homework exercises.

Six-week, twelve-week, and semester grades will be assigned on the basis of the percentage of possible points that have been accumulated since the beginning of the semester.

GRADING SCALE:

90-100%= A

80-89%= B

70-79%= C

60-69%= D

Below 60%= F

Caution: Points are cumulative over the semester and cannot be made up with last-minute make-up or extra work. Try to turn in every assignment.

BOOKS

Do not write in your book (except for workbooks). Keep your textbooks covered. Bring your book(s) to class every day unless specifically notified otherwise. In addition, you must bring a book you select from the AR list for independent reading.

INDEPENDENT READING

Unless other directions are given, a student is expected to read novels from the Reading List for this class. Books on the DBHS core reading list will not be accepted for credit. Grades for independent reading will be based on the following:

-Independent, silent, sustained reading (SSR)-some days at the beginning of the period.

-Consistent reading in class (and at least one hour per week homework reading.)

-Significant number of pages read per week.

-Accurate record turned in regularly.

-Understandable and perceptive summary on record sheet.

-Other oral and/or written reports as assigned.
