VI. Reading Comprehension (14%)(61-67,每題2分)

Watch out for practical jokers. They’ll do almost anything for a laugh. One such prankster was Moe Drabowsky. He was a baseball relief pitcher. Relief pitchers are standby players who replace the starting pitcher in a game if he is pitching badly. If the starting pitcher is throwing well, relief pitchers have nothing to do. They just sit around in the bullpen and hope the manager calls them to play.

Waiting around in the bullpen gave Moe lots of time to think up jokes. But his best joke was played after he retired from baseball. Moe was sitting at home watching his team play on television. It would have been a boring game for him had he still been on the team. The starting pitcher was doing great. He hadn’t given up a single run. The relief pitchers wouldn’t be likely to play in this game. The last thing they’d expect would be a call from the manager. The thought gave Moe a mischievous idea. He still remembered the bullpen phone number. Moe dialed it from his living room. A startled relief pitcher answered. Using a voice that sounded like the manager’s, Moe growled, “Warm up and get ready to play.” The starting pitcher gaped at the man in the bullpen who was getting ready to pitch. Everyone stared at the manager in disbelief. The poor manager could only scratch his head. A thousand miles away, Moe Drabowsky sat in his living room watching the event on TV and laughing.

61. What is the main idea of this passage?

(A) Moe Drabowsky played a lot of practical jokes.

(B) Moe Drabowsky could make his voice sound like the team manager’s.

(C) A relief pitcher is called to play when the starting pitcher jokes about the game.

(D) Moe Drabowsky played a great practical joke on his team after he retired from baseball.

  1. We can assume that Moe made the call _____.

(A) long distance

(B) during the winter

(C) from a phone booth

(D) because he was jealous of the successful pitchers

  1. What does “gaped” most likely mean in the passage?

(A) To yell.(B) To glance.

(C) To stare with open mouth.(D) To wave.

A euphemism (from the Greek wordseu-wellandpheme-speak) is a word or expression that is used when people want to find a polite or less direct way of talking about difficult or embarrassing topics like death or the bodily functions. Most people, for example, would find it very difficult to say in plain language that they have arranged for their sick old dog to be killed. They would soften the pain by saying:We had Ruby put down or We had Ruby put to sleep. Many people prefer to call someoneplain than ugly, orcuddlyrather than fat. As such, euphemisms are an important part of every language, but it seems that English has an ever-growing number of them. The non-native speaker not only has to make sense of the euphemisms he hears, he also has to learn which euphemisms are appropriate in any particular situation. He might be aware that his American friend needs to use the toilet when she asks where thebathroom(or restroom, or comfort station) is, but he is less likely to guess that his English friend has the same need when he says he has tosee a man about a dog. He might have learned, for example, thatin the family way is a euphemism for pregnant. If, however, he says to his boss, “Congratulations! I hear your wife is in the family way.” he would be using an expression that is too familiar for the circumstances.

Schools are full of euphemisms. At FrankfurtInternationalSchool, for example, the special lessons given to students who are having difficulties in their school subjects are calledStudyCenter(in the middle school) andAcademic Workshop(in the high school). Teachers rightly do not want to upset students or parents by being too frank or straightforward, and usually choose a softer word or expression to convey the same message. For this reason, school reports often contain euphemisms such as:He is not working to his full potentialorHe has a rather relaxed attitude to his work(= he is lazy),She is unable to concentrate in class(= she is disruptive),He has strong opinions about everything and is not afraid to voice them(= he is loud and arrogant).

Typical of many recently-coined euphemisms are the words and expressions that try to avoid verbally hurting various minority groups or unfortunate individuals. People who have severe learning difficulties are sometimescalledintellectually-challenged, and those with a physical handicap are referred to asdifferently-abled. Poor people are calledneedy, under-privileged, disadvantaged or economically deprived. Poor countries have in turn been called underdeveloped, developing, emergent, Third World—all in an effort to retain the meaning without raising some eyebrows or being patronizing. The struggle over the past 10-20 years to find an acceptable way to refer to black Americans is further evidence of the increased sensitivity that we now have to the power of language. This sensitivity is often referred to aspolitical correctness.
