English 11 Course Outline 2017 – 2018

Course Objective: This course has been designed to improve students’ reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills through combining reading strategies and writing instruction with grade-level curriculum. All lessons, units, and class activities have been designed in accordance with the NY State Common Core Learning Standards and are aimed at leading all students to success on the ELA Regents and beyond.

●Students and parents are encouraged to check my Teacher Webpage daily. Homework assignments will be updated daily, so students and parents can always be aware of current assignments and projects even when a student is absent from class.
●Students will be expected to use their MHS Google account for email use of Google Drive/Classroom throughout the year.
Tentative Reading List:Students will read either the entire text or passages from any/all of the texts listed below.
●Short Selections from Holt Elements of Literature textbook

●Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
●A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams
●The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
●Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer
●Various nonfiction articles from various sources.
Course Outline/Requirements:
●Students must pass the New York State Comprehensive English Regents in order to receive a high school diploma.
oIn an effort to prepare students for this exam and for the SAT, students in Common Core English 11 are required to complete assignments in a journal notebook. This notebook will be collected periodically during the marking period.
oWeekly Homework Packets:Each week students will receive a homework packet on Monday. These packets are designed to provide additional practice for the Regents Exam. Students will be required to read and annotate the texts in the packets in order to be prepared for a quiz on Friday. Students will receive homework credit for completion of these packets.
oStudents will produce one Common Task per marking period. Each Common Task will be based upon one of the New York State Regents tasks. Students will receive instruction and practice for each task prior to the timed Common Task exam.
●Regents and Final Exam:
oThe NYS Common Core Regents Exam will be administered in January 2018 and will count as 10% of the Final Average.
oA Departmental Comprehensive Exam based on reading, writing, and vocabulary will be administered in June 2018 and will count as 10% of the Final Average.
●ResearchProject: Students are required to complete a research assignment using MLA research style documentation.
●Class Participation Grade: Students will receive a class participation grade each quarter. Class participation will be based on the Classroom Policies outlined below. Each student will start with a 100% Class Participation grade; each violation of a classroom policy will result in a deduction of points from this grade.
●Wilson Daily Prep: Students will complete daily online activities to help them prepare for the SAT exam using Wilson Daily Prep from January to June. Students’ completion of their “Preps” will be counted as a homework grade every five weeks. More information will be provided in January.
●Extra-Credit:Several extra-credit assignments are available for those students who would like to challenge themselves: SAT “Questions of the Day”, Khan Academy, Wilson Daily Prep (non-required days and annotations), independent reading poster (assignment available on my website).
Extra Help:Extra help is always available upon student request. I can meet with students during my free periods as well as before and after school. I will be available for extra help after school until 3:45 on Wednesdays.
Supplies: A 3-ring binder OR a 2-Pocket Folder (plastic coated), Composition Notebook (provided), Highlighters, pens, pencils
Classroom Policies:
●Students should be in their seats and prepared to learn when the bell rings.
✓Cell phones must be put away and on silent.
✓Class materials should be out and ready!
✓Students should be on-time and present in class daily.
●Students should assume responsibility for their own learning.
✓Students should be engaged in and participate in all learning activities.
✓Students must complete all assignments on time. Late work will not be accepted for full credit without a LATE HOMEWORK PASS.
✓Students who are absent must hand in their assignments and take any missed quizzes/tests on the day of their return.
✓Students must obtain missed work when absent (check the website and Google Classroom).
