General Course Information

Students taking this course must ask themselves: Is this the right class for me? Some students think that Dual Credit classes are easier than AP English III. I can definitely say that this class will require a lot of work, and a lot of self-discipline. This class is designed for the highly-motivated student, one who reads carefully and follows directions, who is already computer literate, and can manage his/her own time to ensure coursework is completed in a timely manner.

Technical Problems

Occasional technical problems, either with your computer or the System’s server, are inevitable.

Below are a few ways to minimize problems:

Computer Virus Protection

E.T.V.’S (Electronically Transmitted Viruses) area a reality in this Digital Age. Utilizing storage media devices on more than one computer creates the possibility of infecting computers and Flash/USB drives with a potentially damaging computer virus. LoneStarCollege computers employ aggressive anti-virus procedures to protect its network, but cannot guarantee that a virus might not temporarily infect one of its machines. It is your responsibility to ensure that each storage device you use has been scanned with anti-virus software. Keep your anti-virus software current in order to detect the latest viruses. Unfortunately, the software may not find every virus; therefore, it is recommended that you back up your data at one or more location. If you need access to a Cloud (online data storage space), use the following link as a resource to free Clouds available.

Do not postpone doing the work until the last minute. If you have a problem logging in or trying to connect, you want to have enough time to rectify the problem and still turn your work in on time.

Troubleshooting some technical problems:

  • A common problem is that student’s browsers are set to block pop-up windows. In that case, you would need to change your browser’s settings so that it allows pop-up windows from the Lone Star server.
  • If you experience technical problems, contact the Lone Star Distance Learning Help Desk at 1-866-614-501 for 24/7 assistance. Please note that I am unable to assist in fixing technical problems. Call the help desk for technical help.
  • If your problem it with your KFHS issued laptop, it is your responsibility to take it to the GERC the day the problem occurs.

Turning in Assignments

All work due is due at the beginning of the class of each date posted unless otherwise specified. Daily work that is not submitted by the indicated date and time will receive the grade of a zero. This is including, but not limited to: Exams, Tests, Quizzes, Daily Work, Discussion Forums, etc. All assignments must be submitted via Angel. You can access it via I will not accept work via email. Furthermore, papers MUST be submitted to Turnitin.com (via LoneStarCollege’s Angel System).

Papers that are submitted late (after stated time and date) will suffer a 10 percentage point penalty the first day if it is turned in late but on the same day and 20% per day after that. This includes weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

Here is an example:

A paper or assignment is due on Tuesday in your online class. If it is turned in after 11:00 pm but on the same day, it will receive a 10% deduction.

If it is turned in the next day, Wednesday, it will receive a 20% deduction.

Every subsequent day after that will receive a 20% deduction.

Plagiarism: Plagiarism is a serious issue in every academic class. Plagiarism involves the intentional and unintentional copying of any written or unwritten material or idea without attributing that material or idea to the original source. This includes material retrieved from the Internet.

  • Material that is copied from another source but is not placed within quotation marks or cited is plagiarized.
  • Material that is copied from another source and not placed within quotation marks but is cited is still plagiarized. (No quotation marks mean that the words are yours.)
  • Ideas that are used in your paper but are actually someone else’s ideas but are not cited are plagiarized.
  • Material copied in part or in whole by a peer.

By plagiarizing, you are stating to me that you do not want to learn the material to earn you grade. Instead, you wish to cheat in an attempt to earn a grade. If you submit a plagiarized paper or assignment before the “drop date,” you will receive an “F” for the paper or assignment and all accompanying assignments (rough draft, outline, etc.), and the highest grade you will be permitted to earn in the course is a “C.” . (Refer to the “Code for Academic Honesty” for more details on plagiarism).Keeping track of drop dates is your responsibility, not mine.

Turnitin.com: The Lone Star Community College District subscribes to Turnitin.com, an online collaborative learning tool for faculty that supports faculty in their quest to uphold academic integrity. Student coursework will be submitted to the scrutiny of the Turnitin software. This program essentially checks for plagiarism and reports any instance of plagiarism to the instructor. Please note that these submissions of assignments to Turnitin do not necessarily constitute an accusation or suspicion of plagiarism on the student’s part.

All essays must be submitted to turnitin.com via Angel on or before the day the paper is due.

Any out-of-class paper not submitted to turnitin.com will not be graded and will earn a grade of zero (0) after all late days are exhausted.

Any paper turned in on time but submitted to turnitin.com after the paper is due will be treated as a late paper.

You will complete an easy exercise in the first week of class that will teach you how to use turnitin.com.

Final Exam: A final exam will be given and in the form of multiple choice, short answers, and an essay.
