ENGINEER BASED VOLUNTEER ROLES for the Daniel Adamson Preservation Society

Volunteer Role:TrimmerReports to:Senior Operator

Number of hours:Full day sailing (approx. 8 hours)When required:Mon - Sun

The Role of the Volunteer will be to:

To ensure a correct supply of coal to the fireman and to assist the fireman in the operation of the boiler and associated machinery.

To keep the boiler room clean and tidy.

To oil and grease working machinery as required.

To assist in bunkering all fuel.

Skills/Experience:

To be reasonably fit to work in a hot environment and to be able to carry out physical work.

To be conversant with the working of the Boiler and boiler room machinery.

Be capable of communicating with others.

Be comfortable volunteering within a group.

Volunteer Role:FiremanReports to:Chief Engineer

Number of hours:Full day sailing (approx. 8 hours)When required:Mon-Sun

The Role of the Volunteer will be to:

Must be fully knowledgeable of all boiler room machinery and be able to rectify any faults that may occur.

To direct boiler room personnel in their duties.

Be responsible for raising, maintaining steam to satisfy demand and for shutting down the boiler when required.

Be capable of training operatives in their appropriate roles in the boiler room.

To assist in bunkering all fuel.

Skills/Experience:

Fully conversant with the Boiler, and Boiler Room Machinery.

Good Communication skills.

Be comfortable leading and volunteering within a group.

Volunteer Role:Assistant Engine OperatorReports to:Chief Engineer

Number of hours:Full day sailing (approx. 8 hours)When required:Mon-Sun

The Role of the Volunteer will be to:

To keep the engine room clean and tidy.

To oil and grease working machinery as required.

To assist in warming through, running and shutting down engine room steam plant.

To assist in bunkering all fuel.

Skills/Experience:

Fully conversant with the engine room machinery and electrical systems of the vessel and their operation.

Good Communication skills.

Be comfortable volunteering within a group.

Volunteer Role:Chief EngineerReports to:Captain of vessel or Superintendent Engineer

Number of hours:Full day sailing (approx. 8 hours)When required:Mon-Sun

The Role of the Volunteer will be to:

Must be fully knowledgeable of all machinery and electrical systems on board and know how to rectify any faults that may occur.

To direct all engine room and boiler room personnel in their duties.

Be responsible for manoeuvring the engines as instructed by the bridge.

Be capable of training and assessing operatives in their appropriate roles in the engine and boiler room.

Skills/Experience:

Fully conversant with the Boiler, Machinery and Electrical systems of the vessel and their operation

Good Communication skills

Be comfortable leading and volunteering within a group

Competency based Training and Assessment of skills required.

Commitment:
