ENG3U - Summative Oral Presentation

·  You will be giving an oral presentation to the class as if you were a publishing representative or salesperson. You will be representing your chosen novel, and trying to pitch it to the assembled group of Grade 11 University English teachers.

·  Your goal is to persuade these ENG3U teachers that your chosen novel would be a better book to study than The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, OR a better text to study than the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare.

·  You will also discuss how the movie version of your novel could be a useful tool to use in class, and show a short clip from your chosen film.

·  You must also produce a supporting ad/visual of some kind to promote your novel. It could be a poster, a brochure, a handout, or a video. The supporting ad/visual must be created entirely by you – you may not use ANYTHING from the internet (not even images – draw your own, or take pictures and upload them to your computer)! The visual tool should enhance your presentation and sway the opinion of your audience toward favouring your novel over the current course texts; keep in mind, the focus of the audience should be on you, so the visual should NOT contain a great deal of information/text.

·  Dress professionally and feel free to bring anything a salesperson might have.

·  You must address all 3 texts (the one you chose, Kite Runner, and Macbeth), and your film. Ignoring one of these would make your presentation less convincing and less thorough.

·  Your presentation should 7-12 minutes.

Summary of What to Include in Your Presentation:

1.  Plot Summary of your novel (you MAY include spoilers – we will want to know the ending if we are going to use it in class); the summary should be VERY BRIEF – not more than ½ - 1 page, double-spaced! (the majority of your speech should be the analysis, not summary; you are getting marked on your analysis, not a summary!)

2.  Description of how the film version would be useful to study in the course. Consider questions like: Is the film different or the same as the novel? How could this enhance the unit study? How can you incorporate elements of the film in class (ie. Media studies, looking at effect of each medium, etc.)

3.  Show a brief movie clip during your speech to support what you’re saying (no more than a 3 minute clip – and this must be included in the 7-12 time constraints).

4.  Comparison between your book and the two texts that we have studied. You must say which book you plan to replace - this should be part if your introduction!

a.  You should discuss WHY your novel would be a better choice than the one you propose we replace.

b.  You should discuss how your novel will complement the remaining book. Think about parallel themes or other connections or points of difference that you feel would be beneficial to ENG3U.

c.  You must demonstrate a clear understanding of the themes at work in all three texts you discuss. You might also want to discuss other media texts that could be integrated into the novel study.

5.  Important connections between your book and society. Consider if your book provokes thought about important societal issues or current affairs.

6.  You need to include rhetorical devices in your speech to make it more effective. Highlight and label at least 3 devices and list the method(s) of development you used to formulate your speech. Include a works cited and parenthetical citations if you have used ANY outside sources (besides the books themselves).

7.  Anything else that you feel would be important to mention to a group of Grade 11 University English Teachers! (ie. Why Grade 11’s will like your novel!!)

8.  Your advertisement/supporting visual. Use it as a support during your presentation to PROMOTE your novel; must include key info (book title, author, price, visual) and anything else you feel would help sell your book.

** REMINDER: The supporting visual must be created entirely by you – you may not use ANYTHING

from the internet (not even images – draw your own, or take pictures and upload them)!

9.  Audience/role: You are a publishing representative (salesperson) presenting to a group of Grade 11 English Teachers (you should act and speak like it’s true!)

10.  It should be 7-12 minutes in length (in TOTAL!!). It is extremely important that you stay within time constraints.
