Stage 2of the module seeks to provide candidates, who would be registered social workers, with the opportunity to synthesis their knowledge and skills as Practice Educators and assess practice of an undergraduate and postgraduate social work student on their final Practice Learning Opportunity.

Candidates would need to have successfully completed and been assessed at Stage1 in order to meet the requirements set by TCSW 2012 and is a prerequisite for applying for this stage.

Module Expectations:

Candidates must have full responsibility in supervising and assessing the student’s practice over the course of the placement. Candidates taking a Brunel student are currently able to undertake the Module at no cost

Candidates would have successfully been assessed at Stage 1as a prerequisite for applying for Stage 2 of the programme

Module Overview:

The course enables candidates to demonstrate competence in, and critically reflect upon all 4 domains of the Practice Educator Professional Standards as outlined by the College of Social Work (TCSW) 2012 as below.

Domain A - Organise opportunities for the demonstration of assessed competence in practice

Domain B - Enable learning and professional development in practice

Domain C - Manage the assessment of learners in practice

Domain D - Effective continuing performance as a practice educator

At Stage 2, candidates mainly work with an undergraduate or postgraduate social work student on their final practicelearning opportunity. However, they could also be working with another learner undertaking a structured programme of professional learning in the workplace including mentoring newly qualified social workers whilst in the Assessed Year in Practice.

The module will aim to enable students to:

To acquire substantially advanced skills in developing, implementing and reviewing practice curricula that encompasses an anti-oppressive/ anti-discriminatory framework and promotes the uniqueness and diversity of individual learners.

To enable candidates to develop a substantially advanced capacity for critical reflection, in relation to the aims, processes and outcomes of practice education and assessment.

To enable candidates to critically evaluate their supervisory skills and analyse the influence of power and authority in supervision through observational learning and feedback of their practice.

To enable candidates to critically relate theory to practice involved in the Practice Educator role and how this relates to new developments in the social work field.

Module Content:

The module seeks to provide candidates, who would be registered social workers, with the opportunity to synthesis their knowledge and skills as Practice Educators and assess practice of anundergraduate or postgraduate social work student on their final Practice Learning Opportunity.

The module essentially takes a reflective approach and will:

Consider the current context of practice education

Provide an opportunity to develop a practice profile, work on a personal development plan and learn through feedback from peers

Link the exploration adult learning done in stage 1

Explore the importance of research in social work

Assessment:

The module is assessed by the completion of a portfolio, which will directly relate to candidates working with a current social work student.

The portfolio will include:

A reflective commentary about the role of Practice Educator (up to 3000 words)

Feedback from an independent Practice Assessor on 2Direct Observations of practice with a social work student. This tends to be an agreed supervision session

Reflection on the feedback from observational practice

A presentation on a reflective account of their presentation (up to 1000 words) including preparation for the presentation itself

A clear development plan, highlighting your continuous development goals and plans to achieve these

Produce a Portfolio of Evidence which includes practice placement documents, including midway and final reports, at least two direct observations of direct practice and supervision records.

Study whilst on the module:

The module provides a mixture of formal teaching, private study, time in role as Practice Educators and preparation for own assessment.

The module involves face-to-face teaching at the University over 5 days which needs to be arranged as study leave in advance with your line manager/employer.

Candidates would also need to agree to take, and confirm, a social work student, prior to the start of the module.

We anticipate that candidates will need around 90 hours of private study over the period of the module and whilst the practice learning opportunity happens. Most of this time is needed for engaging in the resources provided and identifying academic resources to support practice education within your specialism from the University Library.

Ebooks and Journal articles can also be assessed through the Online Library, which you will have full access to as part of the course on completion of the University Application Form (AR6), which is available to download.
