Maryland Swimming values education both in the sport of swimming and the classroom. The Maryland Swimming Inc. (MSI) College Scholarship will be awarded to swimmers who have been involved in Maryland Swimming, competed in Maryland Swimming, served their swimming and outside community, and demonstrated solid academic performance.
MSI will award up to six (6) $1,000 dollar scholarships per year to selected athletes. The selections will be announced at the MSI Short Course Championship meet. Scholarship funds will be awarded to the athlete’s college institution upon evidence of class registration. The athlete will submit to MSI their college identification number and correct address of the Bursar’s Office.
The MSI Scholarship committeewill determine selection of the recipients. The committee will be comprised of 5 reviewers: two MSI Board Athlete Representatives, one MSI SeniorVice Chair, and two MSI non-board members, to be assigned by the MSI Vice Chair.The MSI Vice Chair will serve as the Chairperson of the selection committee.
Applications will be sent to the MSI Administrator. The applications will be numbered and have names removed prior to submission to the scholarship selection committee. Vice Chair will reveal the names of the scholarship recipients to the committee and to the Administrator. The Administrator will prepare the certificates for presentation and make arrangements to have the monies dispersed
Selection Criteria
Rating for scholarship applicants will be based on a scale of 100%
- Scholastic data - high school transcript: 20%
- Letters of recommendation: 10%
- Maryland Swimming LSC and/or team positions: 15%
- Activities within swimming – other than practice and competition: 15%
- Personal Essay – 500 words or less: 35%
- Proof of college acceptance: 5%
Application Guidelines
1. Applicant must be graduating in the current year class.
2. Applicant must have a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) or better
3. Applicant must have been involved in Maryland Swimming for four (4) consecutive years prior to high school graduation.
4. Applicant must have competed in at least four (4) meets per year in the 4 years prior to applying for this scholarship.
5. Applicant must not currently or in the past be enrolled in a post high school college institution as a full time student, or ever represented a college institution in competition.
6. Applicant must list other scholarship amounts where indicated.
NOTE: Applicants with Scholarships totaling more than 25% of their tuition may not be
considered for the MSI Scholarship.
Application Components
The following must be attached to the application:
- Two letters of recommendation: one from a non-relative, non-coach and one from a swim coach
- A list and brief description of positions held within your team or the Maryland LSC, if applicable.
- A list and brief description of activities other than practices and competitions you have been involved with in swimming.
- Proof of college acceptance.
- Most recent high school transcript.
- List of Scholarships from other sources.
- Personal essay of 500 words or less using the following prompt: How will what I have learned through swimming help me throughout my life?
