A History of Boe Cemetery by Mrs. Albert (Sarah) Holt

Nestled in the timber along the west bank of the Skunk River lies the Boe Cemetery This site was chosen by ancestors of Randall and Ellsworth area residents for its beauty and convenience.

Located in the southern part of Hamilton County in Ellsworth Township, the original cemetery land was part of a U.S. grant to William Estel on June 15, 1855. Estel deeded the land to Laures B. Olson on June 3, 1857. The original farm was a quarter section valued at $1,500. The cemetery plot is listed as 99 square rods.

Laures B. Olson (also known as Lars B. Olson) and his wife Ubjor gave a warranty deed dated April 1, 1869 (recorded in Book 7 page 340 of the Hamilton County records) to residents of Ellsworth and Scott Townships. Twenty-seven people are listed as grantees, with the total cost being $12.00. "This deed also gives access to go from the south side on line of my farm to the said graveyard, without any request of said persons and these leave shall have power ever to my successors in the same manor (manner) as the graveyard which is Warranted Deeded."

Boe was the family name in Norway but those immigrating to America took the name of Olson upon arriving here.

Through the diligent efforts of L.J. Tjernagel of Story City, a near complete list of burials in this cemetery was made in 1936. Much credit should be given to this man who had foresight enough to accomplish this task. There are 163 names listed of those buried in the Boe Cemetery.

When the cemetery site was chosen it was not suspected that time and the elements would so erode the river banks, causing it to cave in and take with it some of the graves and tombstones. This was very much in evidence around 1915 when the Mt. Olive Cemetery at Randall was started and a number of people purchased lots there and moved the remains of their loved ones to a safer place. However, for many years there has been no evidence of cave-ins as the river channel has altered. For many years the Trustees of Ellsworth Twp. have assumed the care of the cemetery and have kept it fenced and mowed so it is reportedly a place of beauty. It is no longer used.

There was an epidemic of typhoid fever in 1861 and many families or members of families died.

The cemetery is located on a farm, owned by Curtis Owenson, and located in a field north of the homestead.
