Visitors Welcome

Guild Meetings Will Be Cancelled if Fairborn Schools/Senior Center are Closed.

Elkins Class a Great Success!!!

I hope this finds you well and staying out of snow drifts. Lots going on in the guild this upcoming month. Due to snow, one of the Making Faces classes was moved to March 10. There are some spots available if anyone is interested. They are $30 and that includes kit fee. Email me at lesabame(at)sbcglocal.net or call 9378485844. I need to hear from you by March 1, so Maria has time to get the kit done. Check out Miami Valley Quilters’ Guild on Facebook and web for pictures from her first class.

Reminder about the ‘Inner Artist’ activity. Bring your finished wall hangings (12x12 to 24x24) to guild in March and get entered to win a gift basket. If you like, you can then donate your wall hanging to the boutique for sale at the quilt show. Let’s support the guild by selling raffle tickets, getting stuff in the boutique and showing up to view these beautiful quilts. Bring some friends to the show and this should be a great success.

Spots are filling up for the Nancy Prince thread painting classes in April. We really need to fill these classes so please start inviting non-guild friends to sign up and encourage each other. These classes are for beginner on up. The classes are Sunday, April 11, Seasons in my Garden—Spring $50; Monday, April 12, Thread Painting 1-2-3 $52 and Tuesday, April 13, Simple Alpine Flowers $46.50. Each of these is a 6 hour class and includes the kit fee. A few of these are at NQA this year for $65 with an additional kit fee…so this is a deal!!!

Our March program features Terri Tope (Reverse Appliqué) and Vicki Pallus (Texture Magic). They will demo, trunk show and have goodies for sale (cash or check).

Bring your check book and lets help keep the economy going.

Also, National Quilting Day is March 20…find some friends, get together and make something for the community! Contact me if there is anything you need or need more info on one of the classes being offered. Happy quilting!

Lesa Bame

Vice President

ALSO,if there is anyone willing to share your home with an award winning quilter, Nancy Prince has said she is willing to stay in someone's home with these provisions: no smoking, private bed and bathroom, no small children. I am looking for someone who might be able to take her to and from classes and provide meals. I am willing to compensate with reimbursement for meals and covering your class costs. If interested, please email or see me before the guild meeting in March. Thanks, really appreciate the help.

A Note from the President

Happy Snow Day! I think I get to have another snow day with my daughter! My son at OSU is a bit jealous; when you live at college, you go everyday! Isn’t growing up fun!

Well, we have some neat things going on. We have Retreat. I can’t wait! I have no idea what I’ll wear for my Blue Hawaii shirt.

We have Maria Elkins speaking at retreat on Saturday. What a treat! I’ve seen some of the projects from her workshop, and they look wonderful.

Then, big news!!! Our “Extreme Quilting” project is in the Quilt Magazine, April/May 2010, #110 issue, page 98. I was working with Lisa Ruble, the author, before Christmas on this article. It’s an interesting process. She e-mailed Ed initially and he forwarded her message to me. We e-mailed and talked on the phone several times. I sent her a disc of photos and later she e-mailed the article to me to proof.

I thought she did a good job capturing the way things progressed and the essence of how the week went. I thought it was really neat that she gave space to our local quilt shops. We couldn’t have done it without their support.

I hope you like the article. Also, the final article in the magazine is a full-page picture of Maria Elkins’ Broken Dishes quilt which was a second place winner at the Houston show. Congratulations, Maria!

2010 Quilt Show—Raffle Tickets!!!

Well, the raffle quilt is done and it’s gorgeous! I’ll bring it to the Retreat and March meeting. Now we need to sell all those tickets!

As Chris Landis mentioned in December when she showed the quilt after quilting it; this is a big money maker for the Quilt Show. If everyone sold/bought 10 tickets, we would have $2,000 right away. Now we still need to subtract cost of tickets and fabric.

For those of you who will only buy/sell $10, I say “thank you very much”. I really appreciate it. Every sale counts! Now, when you buy/sell your tickets, put your initials/name on the back as to who sold that ticket. For example: I am buying myself 10 tickets. I will fill out the front with my info and put just “S Hill” on the back. Another example: My Mom bought 10 tickets. She filled out the front with her info. I’ll put “S Hill” on the back.

Kathy Evens is a newer member of our guild. She has volunteered to be in charge of these tickets. Yeah! Thanks, Kathy. So, if you want more tickets, please email her at: kevens52(at)msn.com. This is the best way to get in touch with her. However, her phone is 9377672959.

At the March meeting, Kathy will try to process the tickets and put them in the container for a drawing at the end of the meeting. She will read the name/initials on the back of the ticket stub and that person will win a gift certificate. In April, she will have another drawing.

Then, at the May meeting Kathy will announce the person who sold the most tickets. They will also win a gift certificate.

If you sign out the quilt and take it to another guild meeting (Centerville, Springfield, Cincinnati, etc.), you can write your name on the back of those tickets sold. If you and a friend go, you both decide whose name to put on the tickets. Once the show starts, the raffle ticket booth doesn’t count towards this contest.

Quilt Show Sign Up Board/Raffle Tickets/Raffle Quilt

Heidi Young will bring the sign up boards for Quilt Show to Retreat. Please check your calendars before you come to Retreat and sign up to work at the Quilt Show.

We will put the tickets and sign-up boards up at the registration tables before lunch. Please pick up your raffle tickets at this table before you leave on Sunday. The raffle quilt will be shown again at Show N Tell on Saturday evening.

We need everyone helping to make this show a success.

If you want to schedule a date to sign-out the quilt to sell tickets, please call/e-mail Susan Hill during February. In March, Billie Ferguson will take care of the scheduling.

Schedule:

February 25 — Appalachian Quilt Shop (Linda Adams, Hilda Bachmann, Susan Oppenheim)

March 19-21 — Susan Hill

March 21-26 — Centerville Guild (Billie Ferguson)

April 25 — Young’s Dairy (Becky Siva)

2010 Quilt Show Reminders

The time is getting short (can you believe under 70 days) until the show begins. I am sure you all have been busy sewing your hearts out on UFOs, new projects and items for the boutique. Better than shoveling snow!

I will have a container at the next few guild meetings for you to put in any donations for the boutique. The items you make for your own profit need to be delivered to the fairgrounds with inventories on the set-up morning of the show. You may bring them to the meetings if they are ready.

Because of the canceled February meeting we are really going to have to get busy with places to sell our raffle tickets. Check with Susan Hill about which shops you would like to volunteer to sell them. Also other quilt guilds’ meeting. Remember this is for the budget for the next two years.

Call me if you have questions on the boutique.

Getting Acquainted with Facebook

I am currently posting photos from Maria Elkins’ “Making Faces” workshop on Facebook. To view them just type Miami Valley Quilters’ Guild in the “Search” box at the top of your Facebook wall.

If you aren’t already on Facebook, you should give it a try (just type Facebook in your search engine - Google, etc.- and go from there)...there are many guild members already on and there are thousands of quilters around the world and hundreds if not thousands of quilting resources. You can be involved as little or as much as you want...the choice is yours.

I have asked those whose pictures are posted to claim their project, tell a little about it, and maybe post a copy of the original picture as a “comment” as well.

For those not on Facebook, I am waiting to get information from the artists, and then it will put something on the guild website.
