CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

Candidates for MPhil, MProf or a Doctorate are invited to:

  • make a poster presentation. (For PhD/ MD (Res) / MPhil students, your research proposal must have been approved, or, for those on the Professional Doctorate Programme, you will have passed at least the first paper in Stage 1.)
  • give an oral presentation on your research, if your research status will be post Confirmation of Registration or Transfer to PhD/DProf by the time of the conference, or if you submitted a poster to a previous ARU Annual Research Student conference. (If you are registered for an MPhil, we appreciate that you will not go through this stage, and therefore you are invited to deliver an oral presentation when you are writing up your thesis.)

Authors are required to submit an abstract (approximately 300 words) to later than 5pm on Friday 10 March 2017. We will not accept late abstracts or those that do not follow the supplied guidelines.

If your abstract is successful, you will then be invited to make either a poster or an oral presentation (as applicable) at the conference.

POSTER PRESENTATION

The Doctoral School will meet the production cost of shortlisted posters. Please ensure that you follow the poster guidance(see attached document) when preparing your poster. You will be sent a proof copy of your poster for you to approve prior to printing, so please check this carefully.

ORAL PRESENTATION

If you are making an oral presentation using PowerPoint or another electronic format, we ask that you bring this with you on the day. We also request that you email us a copy prior to the conference, so that we can back up your presentation for you.

PRIZES

The abstracts and posters will be judged before the conference. Oral presentations will be judged at the conference. To be eligible for a prize, abstracts and posters MUST be submitted by the due dates. Prizes will be awarded for the best abstract, best posters and best oral presentations.

Abstracts must adhere to the required format. Please follow the specimen abstract given at the end of this letter. Abstracts will also be judged on: clarity, clear structure, readability and use of keywords.

GUIDANCE FOR ABSTRACTS

Audience

Please write the abstract so that your research can be understood by someone who is not a subject specialist in your area.

Format

Please ensure that your abstract conforms to the template provided at the end of this letter. When you submit your abstract, please make it explicit in the email header whether your abstract submission is for either poster or oral presentation. You must ensure that this information is included, otherwise we will not know whether you are planning to make a poster or oral presentation.

The abstract should be a concise précis of the main points of your oral presentation/poster and be capable of being understood without reference to other material. It should be written in English using Arial, minimum font size of 11. The abstract should be approximately 300 words and kept to one page. If this is not adhered to, you run the risk of not being accepted or shortlisted.

Authors should indicate, under their name, their Research Student Status. For the poster presentation, this should be either:

  • Post Research Approval (MPhil or MPhil/PhD or MD (Res)) or
  • Professional Doctorate Post Paper One.

For the oral presentation, this should be either:

  • Post Confirmationof Registrationor
  • Post Transfer

The abstract should normally contain four separate paragraphs which should clearly state:

  • what is investigated
  • how the topic is investigated
  • where possible, what is found
  • where possible, what conclusions are drawn from the evidence.

It is realised that at this stage in your research, your findings and conclusions may be provisional.
