Additional Exercises

Case: Air Pollution in Hong Kong

As shown above, there are 6 measuring points for air pollution (in terms of API, CO index and Suspended particle index). In the following exercise, you are requested to do 4 tasks:

a) Viewing data of a particular point
b)Showing those points with high API
c) Classifyingthe levels of pollution

d) Plotting Charts to show the level of pollution in different points

Task a) Viewing data of a particular point

step1: Select from the Tools box, click on ameasuring point to view details carried in the database.

step2: As given by the pop-up window, identify the information at 富榮花園, including API= 40, SuspendedP index = 0.13 and CO index = 12.

Task b)Showing those points with high API

step1: Right-click on the pollution layer and click Properties.
step2: Select the Definition Query folder and choose the Query Builder button.

step3: click the desired function and value, for example: “API” > 50.

step4: Press OK button.

step5: Identify those points with API less than or equal to 50 are not visible. Only those points with API larger than 50 is left on the map.

Task c) Classifyingthe levels of pollution

step1: Right-click on the pollution layer and click Properties.

step2: Select Symbology folder and pick the Graduated colors under Quantities.

step3: Update the range values by clicking directly on it. Change the range values as desired. Press the OK button.

step4: Identify that there are 3 different colors on the measuring points, e.g. yellow, red and blue.

task d) Plotting Charts to show the level of pollution in different points

step1: Right-click on the pollution layer and click Open Attribute Table.

step2: Select all rows in the table (by using the Ctrl key), and then press the Options button. Choose Create Graph from the pop-up menu.

step3: Choose the desired Graph sub-type, and then press Next button.

step4: Choose appropriate checkboxes, e.g. API and CO, and click Next.

step5: Click the checkboxes of “Label X Axis With” and “Show Graph on Layout”, and then press Finish button.


step6: Locate the resulting graph on the map, e.g. bottom left corner of the layout map.
