Element StudyDue date: October 2, 2017

Name:______Element: ______

Each student will be assigned one element in the periodic table. Then, they will research the assigned element, finding answers to five questions and providing a visual of the element. The questions to be answered are:

1)What was the date of the element’s discovery?

2)Which scientist or scientists discovered the element?

3)Where was the element discovered?

4)Under what circumstances was it discovered, and how has it affected society?

5) What are at least two (2) substances, compounds, or materials that this element is a part of?

  • Students will create a brief presentation about their element that includes the answers to the five research questions. These questions must be answered in the presentation in a manner that flows and is easily understood WITHOUT simply reading the questions and answering them.
  • Students are to include information on the effect the element’s discovery has had on society. For example, the isolation of iron led to the manufacturing of weapons and tools during the Iron Age.
  • A visual is also required. This must be a 3-D model of the atomic structure of the element itself. Drawing on a flat poster board is NOT acceptable. All 3-D models must have the accurate number of protons, neutrons, and electrons including the charge of each sub-atomic particle. (I must be able to count them).

Assessment

3 points / 2 points / 1 point
Presentation: / Student showed a strong understanding of their assigned element; created an accurate, well-organized, rehearsed presentation
Did not read! / Student showed a satisfactory understanding of their assigned element; : created a somewhat organized, and rehearsed presentation / Student showed little understanding of their assigned element; created a poorly organized presentation that did not hold audience’s attention
Content: / Successfully researched their element; answered all five questions / Adequately researched their element; answered all five questions with few errors / Hardly researched their element; contained numerous errors or did not answer all five questions
Visual: / Provided an above average visual; included the correct number of protons, neutrons, and electrons on the visual; included the charge of the sub-atomic particles / Provided an average visual with few to no errors / Visual may or may not have been present, if present it showed too little effort put forth or too many errors
Submission:
Date:______ / All required components of project are submitted on time. / All required components of project are NOT submitted on time.
Points earned:

Total Points: ______/12

Grade Equivalent:______

I understand that my student has been assigned a project that will be counted as a test grade. I also understand that if my student turns in the project late or does not fulfill the requirements of the project according to the rubric provided that his/her grade will be negatively affected.

Periodic checks will take place to ensure that progress is being made.
