Total items found / All the searches were combined using the operator “OR” so that duplicated articles were excluded from the final number of articles found. Example: ("Child, Preschool"[ MeSH] AND "Physical Fitness"[ MeSH]) OR ("Child, Preschool"[ MeSH] AND "Muscle Strength"[ MeSH]) / 1498

The search recruited articles published until April 1st 2014; no starting date limit was set for the search.

* For this search term, we noted that the search retrieved too many articles (n=1571) that had nothing to do with the topic of this review. In this case, the command “Major Topic” was attached to the search, restricting the search to those studies in which the search term is the major focus of the study (n=212).

** Searches conducted using the acronyms, e.g. EUROFIT was entered in the search browser.

MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) is the National Library of Medicine controlled vocabulary thesaurus used for indexing articles for PubMed

Systematic review and proposal of a field-based physical fitness-test battery in preschool children: The PREFIT battery

By Ortega et al.

Electronic Supplementary Material, Table S3. Protocol description of the one-leg stance test.

Purpose / To measure static balance.
Health relation / Very low levels of balance at early ages might detect problems in the neuromuscular system and/or late development.
Equipment / Non-slippery surface and stopwatch.
Performance / Description
This test consists in keeping the balance position as long as possible. The child stand still with the supporting leg on the floor, the free leg flexed at the knee and eyes open. The child is allowed to use their arms to help to keep the requested position. The stopwatch is activated when the free leg leaves the floor. The test will end when the child cannot maintain the required position, that is, moves considerably the support leg, heel or toe of the original position; touch the floor with the free foot or support the free leg on the supporting leg. The time will be measured using a stopwatch. The test assesses the static balance.
Instructions given to the child
Stand still with the supporting leg on the floor and the free leg flexed at the knee as long as possible. You can move your arms, so that they help to keep the requested position. The flexed leg cannot be fixed around the supporting leg, it should be free. You will finish the test when your flexed leg touches the floor. You will perform this test twice, one attempt with each leg.
Practice and number of test trials
Before the test, a familiarization trial will be performed on each leg where the evaluator will help the child to take a position of balance holding them one or two hands if necessary. The test is done once with each leg.
Measurement / Make sure that the starting position is correct and that the free leg is flexed. Record the time that the child kept the requested balance position with each leg. It is recommended to avoid distracting factors that may influence on the results of the test.
Scoring / The result is recorded in seconds with one decimal. For example: 15.3 seconds.
