ELECTRONIC MONITORING TIP SHEET

  • Appropriate modeling behavior in language, actions, what we do, and expose children to matters VERY MUCH.
  • Keep medium, devices, internet access AGE APPROPRIATE with AGE APPROPRIATE CONTROLS
  • Know what controls exist at your child’s schools regarding Internet access to open a conversation with the staff.
  • Know that virtually ALL businesses: stores, fast-food, schools, government agencies HAVE public access to the internet
  • Kids don’t need phones or computers to access the internet:
  • I-PODS
  • MP3 players
  • Video game consoles
  • Devices of friends etc.
  • CAN ALL ACCESS THE INTERNET
  • Be aware of neighborhood Wi-Fi signals that your children have access to:
  • Some of these can be used to EASILY hack your systems or offer free Wi-Fi as a way to access your systems.
  • Change your home passwords REGULARLY/WEEKLY
  • Know WHO your children have access to (peers) and WHAT they have access to.
  • Set guidelines on when devices can be used (Times & Days)
  • Remove devices at bedtime
  • Don’t allow devices to be used in: restrooms, bedrooms with “high privacy”, or places that are difficult to access by an adult to supervise
  • Know that TREMENDOUS amounts of illegal and activity that is HIGHLY RISKY occurs daily at the dining room table and on the living room couch when adults are present just not watching, inquiring, searching, and follow your instincts, it’s OK to ask to see the child’s device.
  • Be aware that some mobile phones have their own “hotspot” capabilities kids turn on the hot spot on the phone sometimes if /when they borrow them.
  • Set TIME LIMITS with online time, device access time, gaming time
  • Only adults should delete histories and data on any electronic devices
  • Be sure that monitors are placed in HIGHLY public and visible areas
  • If access to electronics is an issue remove the hardware (cords, consoles, monitors, power sources, etc.) when an adult cannot supervise
  • Be sure that your know ALL the PASSWORDS of your children’s accounts (social medium, etc.).
  • Be your child’s “friend” on social medium to better monitor
  • Some people have multiple accounts on social medium (one public & one private) parents be aware of this.
  • Learn from your provider how to cancel or suspend services on a device if you need to quickly for your child’s safety.
