COURSE OUTLINE: This course is a 3 hour, 10 min lecture which includes lab activities. The lecture will provide an introduction to the basic principles of Radiologic Technology, ECC program requirements and principles of patient care. The lab activities will include equipment demonstrations, darkroom principles, image production and introduction to digital radiography.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of this course the student will have accomplished the following objectives with a total score of 73% or better:

1.  Describe the basic differences between diagnostic imaging educational programs and career pathways for Radiologic Technologists and describe the types of imaging modalities used in radiology.

2.  Explain the discovery of x-rays, fundamental properties, and the relationship between x-ray production and photon interaction with matter.

3.  List the exposure factors that are controlled by a technologist and evaluate how these factors can affect radiographic quality, density and contrast on a radiographic image.

4.  Define image detail and distortion, contrast and density, kVp and mAs, and explain their effects on image quality.

5.  Calculate the difference in radiation dose rate using the inverse square law, kilovoltage 15% rule change and the millamperage-seconds doubling rule changes.

6.  Compare and contrast how radiographic images are acquired, processed and viewed with film/screen and digital radiography systems.

7.  Describe picture archiving and communication systems (PACS), digital imaging and communication in medicine (DICOM) and teleradiography and their function in digital imaging and distinguish between the fundamentals of direct and indirect capture.

8.  Indentify and label the types of equipment used in radiography such as the x-ray tube components, circuitry, image receptors, digital imaging components, film processors and darkroom equipment.

9.  Classify the units of radiation and measurement, and discuss the safety precautions used for technologists and patients.

10.  Analyze the relationship of radiographic exposure and as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) to the direct and indirect biologic effects on humans.

11.  Discuss the proper locations and methods of obtaining vital signs, medication administration, applying universal precautions for infection control and using effective communication techniques with various types of patients.

12.  Evaluate legal and ethical dilemmas related to the Radiologic Technology profession.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME: Students will define good radiation safety practices.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

ATTENDANCE: Attendance is an essential component of the course. Lack of attendance and tardiness may affect your grade. If you are absent, you are still responsible for the material covered. As outlined in the El Camino College catalog if, during a semester your hours absent exceed the number of units for the course, (3) you may be dropped. Each absence will result in a 2 point penalty. Tardies and leaving early will result in a 1 point penalty. Attendance is taken at the beginning and end of class. You are also expected to practice courtesy and respect at all times.No children can be brought to class and they cannot sit outside of the classroom. Behaviors that disrupt the learning process will not be tolerated. These include:

·  Talking to others during lectures, demonstrations, quizzes or exams

·  Sleeping or laying head down during class

·  Checking cell phone messages, text messaging, or answering phone calls

·  Wearing headphones and listening to music

·  Swearing and rude or disrespectful behavior

·  Distasteful or offensive humor

·  Interrupting class, colleagues, or instructor

PARTICIPATION: Participation is an essential component of the course. You are expected to come to class fully prepared and able to participate. Tardiness is an unacceptable habit. Tardiness is not only disruptive and disrespectful, but a sign of poor preparation and interest. Sharing, cooperation, and working with others are a vital component of active learning. Therefore, when you are late 10 minutes or more on the day of a quiz, you will not be permitted to take the quiz and will receive a “0”.

DROP POLICY: It is the student’s responsibility to formally withdraw from the class if they are no longer in attendance. If a formal withdrawal is not completed the student will receive a letter grade of “F” for the course. Do not assume that I have dropped you from the course if you are no longer attending; it is your responsibility to drop the course.

ASSESSMENT: This course will require a total score of 73% or better on the four exams, quizzes, group projects, labs and the cumulative final exam. You will not pass the class if you do not pass the tests.

GRADE SCALE:

The student’s final semester grade will be based upon total points scored on quizzes, homework, papers, class work, attendance, participation and examinations.

MAKE UP EXAMINATIONS: Make up exams are allowed only if proper steps are followed. The instructor must receive a phone call or e-mail from you the day of the examination and the exam must be made up prior to the next class session (UNLESS OTHER ARRANGMENTS ARE MADE). Make up exams are subject to a 10% penalty. Laboratory experiments and quizzes will not be made up, nor can they be done in advance. Quizzes are given at the beginning of class, if you are more than 5 minutes late, you will not be permitted to take the quiz. It is your responsibility to collect handouts and other pertinent class information. Handouts and homework from the previous week can be picked up during office hours before class.

LATE WORK: There will be a 10% deduction in points for every day your work is late. This is done to assure fairness to those students who complete their assignments on time.

** CUMMULATIVE MINIMUM OF 73% ON EXAM SCORES IS REQUIRED TO PASS THIS COURSE. **

ACADEMIC HONESTY: PLAGIARISM, CHEATING, OR FURNISHING MATERIALS IN ORDER TO ENABLE OTHER STUDENTS TO DO SO WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. Such behavior violates Section I.B.1 of El Camino College’s Board Policy 5138, Standards of Student Conduct. Anyone cheating will receive zero points for that test, exam, or assignment. Cheating of any kind is a serious breach of personal morality and an offense against your fellow students, your instructors, and the college. No Photos can be taken without permission from the instructor. You may not leave the room during the examination.

STUDENT SUCCESS: As your instructor, my primary goal is your success. If you feel you may require special accommodations please meet with me by week three of the semester.

FOOD/BEVERAGES: are not permitted in the classroom or lab. The only exception is bottled water with a cap.

Successful completion of this course does not guarantee placement in the next class of the Radiologic Technology Training Program at El Camino College. However, SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION IS REQUIRED for consideration as an applicant for this program.
