After a while, they learned to trap the flood waters by making walls out of earth thereby developing the first system of irrigation. As their farming methods improved, they began to produce more food than they could use. Local rulers arose who demanded taxes from farmers in the form of surplus food. These rulers, in turn, used it to buy cloth, jewelry, and luxury goods. Artisans and skilled craftsmen grew in number as more wealthy Egyptians desired more of their goods. The population of wealthy and skilled people grew and they began to settle near the homes of the rulers. These areas gradually grew into cities, and cities eventually became centers of culture and power.
