September

Effective Feedback and Timely Communication of Student Progress- 9/14 from 3:00-4:30pm

This professional development opportunity will focus on providing students with quality information regarding their in class performance. We will review the basic expectations associated with providing students timely and effective feedback.

Active Learning Techniques- 9/20 from 5:30-7:00pm

This session will help instructors learn how to multiply the number of in-class activities we utilize to keep students engaged and excited about course learning content. Faculty will develop a course relevant active learning technique and assignment pairing. Faculty are encouraged to bring course lesson plans to use during this session.

Student Writing Resources- 9/27 from 5:30-7:00pm

The session will introduce participants to the different available resources Wilmington University faculty can access to help improve communication of expectations and performance related to student writing. Session to be held as a webinar through Blackboard Collaborate.

Becoming a Scholarly Practitioner Session 1- 10/4: from 5:30-7:30pm

This session is designed to help faculty acquire the skills and practices that are needed to begin to be effective teachers and be ready for that first class! Additional topics covered include using the WebCampus portal to find pertinent course and student information, and how to record student attendance in adherence to Wilmington University’s policy.

Becoming a Scholarly Practitioner Session II- 10/11 from 5:30-7:30pm

The second session in our Becoming a Scholarly Practitioner series examines how to carefully map out course learning objectives and instructional content over a seven (or fourteen) week schedule. Participants will be introduced to the basics of backward design as an approach to course planning. Additional topics covered include using Bloom’s taxonomy to build higher ordered thinking skills in student assessment, supplementing our courses with professional experience and resources, and a brief introduction to available sources of course relevant information available on the web to help our courses avoid overreliance/ dependence on the course textbook.

Becoming a Scholarly Practitioner Session III- 10/18 from 5:30-7:30pm

The final installment of Wilmington University’s Becoming a Scholarly Practitioner series will help participants develop an agenda for their first class session. Participants will be given the opportunity to develop their course policies and discuss how these policies impact student behavior during class. Tips for engaging students, using active learning techniques, ice-breakers for the first night, dealing with stress or nervousness while teaching and scheduling a five hour class session will be provided. The series will wrap-up with a discussion of how traditional aged students and adult learners differ and how we can incorporate different techniques to reach our unique student population.

New IDEAs-Making the Most of our Student Feedback- 10/5 from 10:00-11:30am

10/5 from 5:30-7:00pm

We have received student feedback via our IDEA course report; now what? This presentation will provide participants with information on how to convert our IDEA student feedback into actions we can take as instructors to improve our teaching effectiveness. Participants are encouraged to bring any and all questions they have about reading IDEA course reports, as a portion of time will be devoted to an open question and answer session regarding these reports.

Cyber Day- Keeping Class on Track- 10/20 from 3:00-4:30 pm with a second session from 5:30-7:00pm

Strategies from both Educational Technology and Faculty Development are provided to give you the best tips on what to do if weather or other circumstances interrupts your classroom schedule. Faculty will provide an example of an assignment or resource that uses outside of the class time to help maximize learning/ value of in class time-faculty demonstrate ability to continue student learning in absence of in-class time.

Planning for Hybrid Courses- 10/26 from 12:00-1:00pm

This discussion will focus on strategies and tips for pairing hybrid course learning content with its proper format. Participants will develop a game plan for choosing between online and face-to-face delivery of class topics and assessments.

Academic Writing and International Students: Culture, Needs & Strategies- 11/2 from 10:00-11:30am

The presentation will begin with a brief overview of how the roles and rules of academic writing are shaped by culture. Participants will understand how these cultural differences result in unique needs on the part of international students.

6 Steps toward Implementing Problem-Based Learning- 11/7 from 5:30-7:00pm

Problem-based learning is a student-centered technique where learners engage with real world issues from their area of study. This session will provide a blueprint for developing and implementing a problem-based learning exercise in your class.

Engaging the Adult Learner 11/16 from 5:30-7:00pm

This session will focus on helping faculty create a classroom climate that is conducive to adult learners. Adult learning theory will be introduced and discussed, so that these principles can be applied to lesson planning, developing assessments, and conducting engaging class sessions.

Designing Rubrics-11/28 from 2:00-3:30pm

Session will focus on building a rubric for an assignment we have created that successfully communicates our expectations as instructors. Participants are encouraged to bring an assignment to this session so that a rubric can be developed during this hands on demonstration.

This session will focus on the new IDEA-Campus Labs platform and will demonstrate how to use the information provided to review and utilize IDEA student survey feedback. The new IDEA platform will be used starting with Fall Block 1 courses.

This topic of discussion will focus on how to keep students engaged with course learning content and keep you class on schedule when weather or other circumstances prevents an in-class meeting.

Becoming a Scholarly Practitioner Sessions 1-3: 12/10 from 8:30am-12:00pm

This program, designed for new instructors, will introduce participants to the art of teaching at Wilmington University, how to align learning objectives and assessments when planning class meetings, and how to keep students engaged during our class sessions. Experienced faculty are welcome to attend as well.
