Station Outreach Initiatives

Internship Program:

During the reporting period, 17 students participated in WNEP’s internship program, which is operated in collaboration with area universities and colleges. Interns gained college credit and experience while working in the station’s news, news photography, graphics, weather, and morning production departments.

Participation in Events of Educational Institutions:

During the reporting period, a WNEP meteorologist spoke to students at a variety of local schools. During each presentation, the meteorologist spoke about meteorology and the job of a television meteorologist.

On March 31, WNEP reporter co-hosted and judged web logos at the East Stroudsburg University Computer Fair, an event intended to promote skill development for high school students interested in technology-related careers. The first-place regional winners will compete in the 2006 Pennsylvania High School Computer Fair.

On April 4, WNEP reporter spoke to students at Bloomsburg University about professional dress code in the business world.

On April 3, WNEP reporter talked with East Stroudsburg University students about television news business and consumer reporting.

On April 7, WNEP reporter spoke to high school juniors and seniors interested in television news at Wilkes University.

On April 20, WNEP’s station manager spoke to approximately 100 students at the 2nd Business Symposium sponsored by the Business Association at Luzerne County Community College.

On March 6, 2007, a WNEP anchor and reporter served as a speaker/workshop leaders for the Journalism Institute at Bloomsburg University. Approximately 200-250 high school students attended the workshop. They spoke about opportunities for internships at WNEP-TV, college requirements and how to develop a relationship with news management early on in your career to gain access in the business.

Job Shadowing:

On March 31, a Bloomsburg High School sophomore student job shadowed a reporter in preparation for her upcoming informative speech and future career.

On April 17, an eleventh grade student participated in WNEP’s job shadowing program by shadowing a WNEP meteorologist.

On July 22, a high school senior worked with a WNEP meteorologist as part of her “Senior Project.”

Career Fairs:

On April 8, WNEP’s news director attended the Columbia University Job Fair, where he met with 16 graduate students individually for 20 minutes each.

On April 19, a WNEP reporter and photographer attended the Bishop Hannon High School Job Fair. Students approached the station booth speaking to employees about courses needed to become broadcast professionals.

On May 17, a WNEP reporter attended Delaware Valley Career Day.

Participation in Events of Community Organizations:

On March 29, WNEP personalities participated in the Dress for Success luncheon in Scranton. Dress for Success is a local non-profit that promotes economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

Between June 21 and 24, WNEP’s news director attended the Asian-American Journalists Association Career Fair in Honolulu, Hawaii. He staffed the booth, viewed tapes and met with students and professionals.

Other Activities:

Scheduled station tours are given to school and scout groups throughout the year by WNEP on air personalities.
