Lab B (demonstration lab) – Parts 1 and 2

This lab will combine the elements of Lab A with a demonstration of a sport skill. Please refer to class materials related to effective demonstrations as well as content from our text. You will present your Lab B assignment on Thursday (9/27) and Tuesday (10/2) during our class in the gym. This lab is in two parts:

  • Part 1 (9/27) - a verbal explanation/demonstration using your visual aid with no physical demonstration of the skill.
  • Part 2 (10/2) - the demonstration in its entirety, using verbal information, your visual aid and a physical demonstration of the skill.

Please plan on producing the following for your Lab B assignment:

  1. A visual aid that communicates cues or concepts regarding the skill you are presenting that is neat and clear.
  2. A written description of your presentation including the cues you will be using, how you will demonstrate the skill, etc.
  3. A modified lesson plan that will include a psychomotor and a cognitive objective (with the situation being “At the end of the demonstration…”), the details of your demonstration and three questions that will allow you to assess your cognitive objective.

Keep in mind the following from our class supplement and discussions:

  • Be an effective model of the skill you are showing.
  • The demonstration should be directed at the students visually and conceptually.
  • Show the entire skill initially, then you can break it down into the component

parts, presenting the skill in slow motion can increase the clarity of your presentation.

  • Identify the major features and perform them in sequence.
  • Emphasize safety points if they are relevant.
  • Mention common faults as appropriate.
  • Try to indicate a way for students to check to see if they are doing it well.
  • Use key words (cues) as a reference for key elements of the skill/movement.
  • Check for understanding.
  • Show the skill more than once.
  • Provide different angles as you present the skill.
