JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: / Kennel Assistant
Reporting to / Kennel Manager
Responsible for / Standards of care in kennel areas, ensuring animal needs appropriately met every day working as part of a small team.

Salary: / £14, 250, p.a
Hours: 40 hours per week for full time, 24 hours per week for part time, both shift work basis
Permanent, Full time and Part time (salary pro rata)
Summary
Working within a highly focused small team, the kennel assistant role is vital to the running of the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home operations. With the responsibility for the care and welfare of dogs in kennel areas each day on shift they must bean enthusiastic andreliable person who loves dogs and doesn't mind heavy work in allweathers. Able to represent Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home in all that they do.
Duties and responsibilities
Animal Welfare
Prepare and provide food and water for dogs in the kennel area.
Clean, disinfect and maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness of the kennels and general work areas.
Work with the animals in a calm and controlled manner.
Attend to the exercise, socialising and grooming of dogs as required.
Work with staff members, volunteers and trainees.
Assist in the handling of dogs for the purpose of examination and treatment.
Assist manager and supervisor in the up keep of animal records.
Work with members of the public as part of the rehoming process, providing a high level of customer service.
Additional
Any other ad hoc duties required of the role, as directed by the Kennel Manager or supervisor.
Follow all health and safety rules and procedures and ensure all accidents and incidents are reported immediately to the Manager/Supervisor.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home

Essential / Desirable
EDUCATION AND TRAINING / On the job training from previous animal care role. / Qualification in animal care.
EXPERIENCE / Experience in a previous kennel role, either in a paid or volunteer capacity.
Animal handling, being able to put a dog onto a lead safely and move the dog from its pen to a run for exercise. / Responsibility for kennel area, able to assist kennel manager and supervisor with administrative support tasks.
Working with animals in a vet clinic environment.
Customer care and dealing with difficult customers.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE / Fast learner with ability to assimilate large amounts of information into action.
Able to observe dogs and understand what to look out for to report to senior staff.
Able to communicate well with colleagues, senior staff and customers.
Able to represent the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home with the public. / Able to handle a wide range of dogs, some with behavioral problems, in a safe and controlled manner.
Able to demonstrate high quality animal handling techniques.
