/ ECS Receives $2 Million From US Department of Education To Track No Child Left Behind State Activities
Denver, CO — The Education Commission of the States (ECS) has received $2 million from the U.S. Department of Education to track and report on how well states are implementing the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). ECS will monitor activities relevant to six major issues areas specified in the legislation including accountability, teaching quality, reading, flexibility, school choice and corrective actions/school improvement.
“We’re honored to receive this generous award because the work associated with it builds on the work we’ve already done to help state policymakers understand the provisions and requirements of No Child Left Behind,” said Ted Sanders, ECS president. “It also recognizes that ECS is the only national organization whose staff serves all the constituencies that must be involved to make the promise of NCLB a reality: governors and their education policy advisors, legislators and legislative staff, chief state school officers, state education board members, state higher education officers and business leaders.”
With information gained by tracking state activities, ECS will advise the department, education organizations and states on the status of the implementation of NCLB. It also will identify states that can serve as examples of effective policies and practices for overcoming difficulties related to implementation.
