Course Description:
Students learn how to navigate the financial decisions they must face and to make informed decisions related to budgeting, banking, credit, insurance, spending, taxes, saving, investing, buying/leasing a vehicle, living independently, and inheritance. Development of financial literacy skills and an understanding of economic principles will provide the basis for responsible citizenship and career success.

Curriculum:
Textbook (optional for reference): Tucker, I. B., & Ryan, J. S. (2013). Economics and Personal Finance. Mason, OH: Cengage Learning.
Online: The students will be completing assignments online using the Edgenuityand EverFi curricula.

Materials and Supplies:
Students must have the following materials and supplies at every class session:
1) Headphones (earbuds are fine) – Headphones are required to hear the instructional videos, and so it is important that the students always have a pair.
2)Notebook (optional) – Edgenuity includes a space for typing E-notes, but some students may prefer to keep notes in a traditional notebook instead.

Grading:
A student’s grades will be available through the parent portal in Edgenuity, as well as periodically visible in PowerSchool. For more information about understanding and tracking Edgenuity student progress and grades, please see the attached “Understanding Your Child’s Progress Report” form.
Bedford County policy now requires that grades be classified into two categories: Formative (40% of the grade) and Summative (60% of the grade.)

Formative Activities: Edgenuity assignments other than quizzes and tests.

Summative Activities: Edgenuity quizzes and tests.

Grading Scale (as per Bedford County guidelines):

A: 90 – 100 / B: 80 – 89
C: 70 – 79 / D: 60 – 69
F: Below 60

Class Rules / Regulations:
1) Be prepared for class (be punctual and bring the materials you need!)
2) Be respectful of others (this includes teachers and other students!)
3) Be thorough in your work (do your best on all assignments!)
4) Be in your seats until the bell rings (and no packing up early!)
5) Be willing to participate in activities and discussions (or you’ll be stuck just listening to Mr. Brown talk all period!)
6) Be mindful of instructions and follow them the first time (repeating oneself is not a pleasant task!)
7) Be accountable (take responsibility for your actions.)
8) Be sure to work only on your own computer (do not do anything to other students’ computers or do their work for them.)

Course Guidelines:
Students will be completing a variety of tasks online using the Edgenuity curriculum. These include vocabulary, direct instruction videos, online content (where the students go to external websites to find the requested information), journal entries (where students synthesize information from the videos and the online content to create a journal response to a prompt), a quiz for every lesson, and unit tests.
