Course Description:

This course introduces the principles and methods of economics with emphasis on macroeconomic theory. Topics include basic models of national income and employment determination, fiscal policy, banking and monetary policy, the theory of international trade and finance, and contemporary macro-economic issues such as unemployment, inflation, and government budget policy.

Course Prerequisite:

Required text: Macroeconomics: Canada in the Global Environment, 7th Edition, by M. Parkin and R. Bade.

MyEconLab is anonline study tool and is required for graded quizzes.Both the required textbook and MyEconLab are available in our University bookstore.

If you purchase a new textbook, the license forMyEconLab is included. If you purchase a used textbook, you need to purchase the license for MyEconLab separately. To complete the graded online quizzes, you must have your own account for MyEconLab.

Teaching Assistants:

Teaching assistants will hold regular office hours to answer questions about course material. The time and location will be announced in class.

Course Activity:

Class sessions will introduce and review some material from the text, introduce additional material, conduct discussions of economic issues, and go over problems and applications. Active class participation is strongly encouraged. Students should ask questions whenever something is unclear--these questions can help clarify issues for everyone.

For technical assistance, please contact . You should print out lecture slides and outlines before each class and bring them with you. The lecture slides and outlines are not a substitute for your taking class notes – they are not that extensive or detailed, but they will give you a good idea of the issues covered each class and the related readings. It is required that you check our course website and moodle before each class meeting for any updates.

Students are responsible for all material and announcements made in class, posted on our course website and on moodle. In case you miss a class, it is your responsibility to get the class notes from your classmates.Regular attendance and active class participation are required. Since coming late or leaving early disturbs other students in the class, this should occur only in rare circumstances. Use of cell phones is not allowed in class.

Examinations and Grading:

Course grades will be based on a percentage system, as follows:

Online quizzes Throughout the term20%

Midterm Exam In class; February 7, 2012 40%

Final Exam Scheduled by the University 40%

The exams will consist of multiple choice questions. Both midterm and final exams are closed-book exams. The final exam will NOT be cumulative. Online quizzes will be conducted throughMyEconLab. You will get detailed instructions in class on how to use MyEconLab and how to complete online quizzes.No other deviations from the specifications of the above grading arrangement are permitted.

Exams must be taken by all students at the scheduled time. There is NO make-up exam for the mid-term exam. The weight for the midterm exam will be transferred to the final exam only if the students could supply hard evidence of calamity that prevented them from taking the exam (e.g. illness or injury, death in the family) AND provide detailed documentation in the manner required by the department. Please contact the Undergraduate Economics Office (1144 Vari Hall) for the Department Guidelines for Deferred Standing on missed final exam. Students missing exams who do not meet the above requirements will receive a grade of zero for the exam.
