Briefly describe the activity/strategy, providing enough detail so that a colleague can replicate the activity/strategy.
1. Introduction I wanted to create an environment for the students where the students were able to fully understand the expectations of the class while providing a tool to help them be successful.
2. Set-up & Supplies I used the DAPPS activity to achieve this goal by asking the students to decide on the percentage they would like to receive in the class and then write out how they intended to achieve it.
3. Directions I explained to the students the meaning behind each of the letters of DAPPS. When goal setting, your goals should be "dated", "achievable", "positive", "personal" and "specific". I allowed them a few minutes to think this through and then asked them to write down their class goals and use the DAPPS form to check that each goal fit into the model.
What worked well? It helped the students realize what what is expected in the class and provided a tangible method to ensure success.
What would you change? I would probably introduce the activity and then allow the students to take a break. After the break, I would allow them to write down the goals.
Would you use the activity/strategy again? Why or why not? Yes, I would definitely use this strategy again. It really helped the students to focus on the outcome of the class.
Please describe any student learning and/or changes that you observed after the implementation of the activity/strategy. With a goal of a percentage in mind, the students set out to achieve this goal in a realistic manner.
