Job Title: Immigration Solicitor, Poppy Law Centre

Job Purpose
The Poppy Project is looking to recruit a immigration lawyer in its newly EU funded Law Centre to support victims of trafficking in need of legal advice. The solicitor will:
· To provide advice and casework in the category of immigration law for trafficked women who are unable to gain legal support elsewhere
· Refer clients to relevant legal services
· To represent clients at courts and tribunals
· Deliver trafficking awareness training
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
1.1 To give legal advice to callers to the Poppy Law Centre advice line and clients in the area of immigration law.
1.2 Prepare and make written representations to the relevant authorities.
1.3 To research relevant law, seek out and initiate and conduct appropriate cases, including test cases, in accordance with the Law Centre casework strategy
1.4 To analyse detailed legal and factual issues, apply sound judgement and take decisions on whether to take on cases in accordance with the casework selection policy
1.5 To advise, keep informed, negotiate on behalf of and represent Law Centre clients before tribunals and, where appropriate, courts and where appropriate, instruct and work with counsel in cases in the higher courts
1.6 To draft appropriate legal documentation prior to and during representation
1.7 To keep detailed financial records and seek the appropriate prior authority.
1.8 To input to the development of the casework strategy and make suggestions for review
1.9 To keep records to an appropriate standard of advice and casework for management, funders and in accordance with relevant professional standards, for example, the standards required by the Legal Services Commission, Law Society and OISC.
1.10 To assist other law centre staff where appropriate with specialist advice in the area of immigration law.
1.11 To produce training materials and deliver training
1.12 To attend, prepare for, and participate in appropriate seminars and conferences
1.13 To research and produce written material for publication
1.14 To respond to appropriate consultation documents and policy statements
1.15 To participate where appropriate in media interviews on casework and policy issues
1.16 To keep records of policy and partnership work for management
2 The Poppy Project is looking to work more globally and as such it will be desirable for the candidates to demonstrate the following:
2.1 Develop area of specialism relating to trafficking, as agreed with the National Coordinator
2.2 The willingness to travel internationally at short notice and for varying lengths of time is essential
3 Policy, Reporting and Monitoring
3.1 Contribute to the development of policies and procedures and to take responsibility for the development of good practice in relation to the postholder’s designated area of expertise
3.2 Experience of writing donor funding evaluation reports is desirable
3.3 Experience in contributing to the development of funding applications is desirable. A willingness to partake is fundraising activity is essential.
3.4 Assist in monitoring the department’s achievement of key performance indicators and discuss and implement corrective action as required
3.5 Contribute to the production of reports and statistics as required

POPPY OUTREACH WORKER PERSON SPECIFICATION
Knowledge and Experience
1 An understanding of trafficking and how it affects women is essential / ü / ü2. OSIC Registered Level 3. We would also expect the
successful candidate to have a minimum of 2 years post qualifying experience / ü / ü
3. Extensive knowledge of the immigration appeal process is essential / ü / ü / ü
4. A good grasp of legal concepts, good drafting skills / ü / ü / ü
5. Experience and knowledge of managing caseloads,
(assessing need, assessing risk, planning implementing/accessing and evaluating care) is desirable but not essential / ü / ü / ü
