The following contribution is President Mike Folk’s notes from the Winter Workshop.

2011 ACSC WINTER WORKSHOP NOTES

The 2011 ACSC Winter workshop was held February 26 in Columbia, SC. Mike and Christy Folk attended as representatives of the Eastern North Carolina Shag Club.

The meeting was chaired by Ken Aiken, the President of ACSC. The attendees voted to fill three positions on the SOS Board of Directors. Nominees for the three positions were: Dwayne Baggett

Ronnie Gregory

Helen Still

Hector Phifer

Bob Wood

The following were elected: Ronnie Gregory, Dwayne Baggett and Helen Still. They will serve a three year term.

Allan Henry gave the Treasurer’s report for ACSC and the latest balance is $17,615.82.

It was reiterated that ACSC clubs must send a representative to the Winter Workshop, Summer Workshop and one other meeting (usually held during SOS). Clubs must attend three to qualify for the reimbursement check (which is given during the Fall SOS meeting).

Ron Whisenant explained that each SOS club at OD is given $1500 for a food allowance. The food that you see offered by each of the clubs is paid for from your SOS card (the clubs are not paying for it).

The Summerville, SC Shag Club was admitted for membership into the Association as a new member.

It was pointed out that the ACSC “White Book” manual is available in its entirety on the SOS website (go to site info/site map to find it).

There have been no changes on the ASCAP issue.

There were 1772 SOS cards sold prior to and during Midwinter SOS, for a total of $53,160.00. This sets a new record for Midwinter SOS. There have been 2470 SOS cards sold to date.

A book will be published next year chronicling the history of SOS. It is written by a USC professor and the title will be “Carry My Heart to Ocean Drive”.

To break the Guinness World record for shagging on the beach will require 2501 couples. There is still talk of trying to do this during Spring SOS.

The City of NMB will no longer allow candy to be thrown out during the SOS parade. Beads can still be thrown out.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Mike Folk reported that Josh, the manager at the Bistro, has given permission for us to have a silent auction fundraiser any time. It was discussed that late April or May is preferred for that fundraiser. Mike also mentioned he will need the $50 for the party at the Pirate’s Cove. He also has paid the deposit to rent the American Legion building for our Shag-O-Ween and Christmas parties.

NEW BUSINESS

There will be a parade at Spring Safari at S.O.S. The question was posed to see if there was any interest. There was no discussion. It was stated that the rules have changed and people on the floats can no longer throw out candy as we have done in the past.

Discussion was held about getting an ENCSC pamphlet printed to advertise our Shag Club. Addie Lou Leggett will make some inquiries to look in to costs with PIP Printing/Donald Stocks.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The club was made aware that there is a new publication called Eastern Living Magazine that has featured several articles and pictures of shagging events in the East.

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Brenda Brooks
