Theory Presentation Instructions and Grading Rubric

Each student in NUR 3103 will present a nursing theory to the class. The presentation is worth 25 points.

Guidelines for the Presentation:

This presentation should include the following:

·  Basic information about the assigned theory. Nursing theories can be quite complex. You should present the essential elements of the theory and not the less important aspects.

·  Your explanation of the theory should include the basic concepts of the theory and how they are connected. Use a diagram or picture in your presentation to make this clearer to your audience.

·  Explain how the concepts of the nursing metaparadigm (person, health, environment, and nursing) are defined by the theorist.

·  Describe how the theory is used by nurses to assess needs and implement nursing interventions.

·  Keep the length to 10 -12 minutes maximum.

·  Provide a handout to peers and instructor that includes

o  A one-page bulleted list of key points. Back of page should include a graphic representation of the theory.

o  A reference list that shows evidence of use of a variety of high-quality references.

Scoring Rubric:

1.  Content (12 points)

  1. Covers primary elements of theory
  2. Contains definitions of person, environment, health, and nursing
  3. Discusses how the theory is used in nursing practice
  4. Accurate and current information
  5. Includes diagram or graphic of theory
  6. Shows evidence of critical thinking

2.  Organization (5 points)

  1. Well organized with introduction, body, conclusion
  2. Good transitions
  3. Introduction includes attention-getter
  4. Logical progression and connections
  5. Conclusion includes summary and closure

3.  Delivery (5 points)

  1. Clear, precise and appropriate word usage
  2. Articulate and expressive
  3. Level appropriate for audience
  4. Maintains audience interest/responds to cues from listeners
  5. Free of distracting mannerisms
  6. Avoids reading from notes or over-reliance on written material
  7. Voice quality
  8. Enthusiasm
  9. Creativity
  10. Use of audiovisual aids

4.  Reference list (2)

  1. Uses a variety of appropriate references (books, journals, websites, etc)
  2. Correct APA format

5.  Bulleted list of key points and graphic representation (1)

  1. Includes principle elements of the theory
