Required Supplies:A textbook, a ruler, pencils, erases, and graph papers.

Calculator: Absolutely no calculator is allowed for homework, quizzes, and exams.

Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Mathematics 105, or acceptable level of skill as demonstrated in the mathematics placement process.

Course Description:This course is designed to give students understanding and competency in the basic operations of elementary arithmetic and some basic concepts of algebra. Topics include operations with signed numbers, order of operations, evaluating expressions, integer exponents and rules of exponents, working with polynomials, solving linear equations, graphing linear equations, and solving simple word problems.

Homework: Homeworks for each section are all the multiple of 3 problems in the exercises set. For example, the homework for section 2.1 are #3, 6, 9, 12, …, 93. I will not collect homeworks, but you should do them for practice.

Quizzes: Problems of the quizzes will be similar to the homework problems. I will give at least one quiz per week, usually two or three quizzes per week. NO make-up for quizzes.

Test: There will be five tests. All tests are closed book and closed notes. Tests from previous semesters are posted on my website Students will be allowed to make up at most one test. Students should take the make-up test within one week of the scheduled test.

Final: The final exam is cumulative. The exam is closed book and closed notes. Final exam is mandatory, and failure to attend will result in an “F”.

Grading Scale:

A: 90% - 100%; B: 80% - 89.9%; C: 70% - 79.9%; D: 60% - 69.9%; F: 0% - 59.9%

Note: I do not assign incomplete grade, except for reasons that are totally beyond your control.

Student Learning Outcome (SLO):

The student will be able to solve simple first degree equations involving fractions and decimals.

Attendance: Two 10 minutes tardies is equivalent to one absence.Missing more than 20 minutes from a class will count as one absence. If you missFIVE or more class hours for any reason, you may be excluded from the course. It is student’s responsibility to drop the class if he/she decides to withdraw from the class.

Academic Honesty: Any form of dishonesty will not be tolerated. Any form of cheating on an assignment will earn an automatic 0 (or F) on that assignment.

Class Rules:

  • Turn off your cell phone (or set it to silent) during class time
  • No texting during class time.
  • Show up on time and don’t leave early.
  • Always bring your textbook.
  • Show respect to your teacher and your classmates.
  • Do not bring food into the classroom.

Failure to comply with class rules will result in points being deducted from exam or being asked to leave. If you leave early, it does count as an absence.
