The Physician Extender II role provides career tracks for certified nurse practitioners and licensed physician assistants performing advanced responsibilities.

Nature of Work: The Physician Extender II performs advanced level specialized medical care and treatment. AT this level, employees are considered expert and in possession of scarce skills documented as difficult to recruit for. The Physician Extender II may also function in a managerial capacity over a larger, more complex clinical program with minimal hands-on practitioner functions. Performs medical acts including giving medical diagnoses, ordering therapy, and prescribing medications in accordance with regulations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: If the PE functions in a management capacity, demonstrated competency of the Core Competencies defined in Appendix B of the pay plan is required. In addition, the employee must possess specific functional competencies. Must have thorough knowledge of techniques of interviewing, medical and relevant history taking, principles and practices of general medicine and disease states as related to the area of work. Must have thorough knowledge of health appraisal tools, laboratory tests and findings, material medical and therapeutic procedures as related to the area of work. Must have thorough knowledge and an ability to plan a regime of care based on assessments and findings. Must have thorough knowledge of available resources and appropriate referral methods. Must have skill in performing clinical functions. Must have the ability to teach and counsel individuals, families, and groups in areas of health maintenance, preventative medicine, and care of the sick. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and to gain the confidence of patients and families and work effectively with them. Must have some ability to plan and conduct in-service training programs. Must have the ability to supervise and coordinate other nursing and medical staff, to evaluate and plan care, and to convey this to a physician.

Minimum Education and Experience: For entry into this class as a practitioner, graduation from a Physician Assistant Program approved by the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners and “approved to practice medical acts” based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners, and two years of experience in the specialty area of assignment; or licensed as a Registered Nurse by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and graduation from a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee, and two years of experience in the specialty area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. For entry into the class as a manager, at least one year of the above stated experience must be in a supervisory capacity.
