TeenNatInternship2016 Application

The TeenNat internship at Pepperwood provides an opportunity for a team of 13-18 year olds to participate in science and art while exploring a 3,200 acre nature preserve. Participants will gather biological data using digital cameras, GPS units, and data sheets. Data and photographs collected will be uploaded to an online database called iNaturalist.org. Interns will also collaborate with Save the Redwoods League by collecting data for the Sword Fern Watch project. Interns will meet professionals in STEM careers during the Eco Career Lunch. At the completion of the internship, photographs will be displayed in our gallery and open to the public.

Each week of the internship builds upon the last and brings something new to the experience:

Week one (July 5-7)- Icebreakers with the TeenNat team; lessons on: using a digital camera, photography basics, GPS units, map reading, hiking safety, how to use a field guide, ID’ing common species of Pepperwood; sign up for iNaturalist.org; hike everyday

Week two (July 12-14)-Collect data and upload to iNaturalist; meet Pepperwood scientists; introduction to Eco Careers; hikeeveryday

Week three (July 19-21) - Collect data and upload to iNaturalist; introduction to redwood research; collect data in the redwoods; hike everyday

Week four (July 26-28) - Collect data in and out of the redwoods and upload to iNaturalist; select photos for the gallery exhibit; hike everyday

Week five (August 2-4) - Collect data and upload to iNaturalist; Eco Career Lunch; hike everyday; closing games and reflection; tears and goodbye

Qualifications

  • 13-18 years old.
  • Able to commit to all 5 weeks of the internship program.
  • Able to hike on steep, un-even terrain up to 5 miles in hot weather while carrying 10 lbs of gear.
  • Responsible for maintaining gear and materials and being prepared each day for hiking.
  • Maintain a mature, professional, andcheerful attitude.
  • Flexible, communicative, team-player, passionate about the environment and/or photography.
  • Safety awareness for self and others.
  • Basic computer skills recommended.
