Dynabrade Tool Testing Protocol

Power

Test Equipment:

Magtrol HD 705 Dynamometer

Magtrol HD 800 Dynamometer

Calibration cycle: Yearly In-House: 3 Year @ OEM Lab

Test Specifics:

  • Tools are given 5 drops of air tool oil before running test and are not oiled during performance of test.
  • Dynabrade and Competitive tools are tested
  • Competitive tools are tested to ensure Dynabrade tools meet or exceed power levels.
  • Dynabrade tools are thoroughly tested during development process.
  • Production tools are tested whenever performance is questioned.

Sound

Test Equipment: Larson Davis 831 integrating sound meter

Calibration cycle: Yearly @ Certified lab

Test Specifics:

  • Testing protocol ISO 15744
  • Testing is done in an indoor test chamber.
  • Tools are positioned 1 meter above terrazzo floor.
  • 5 separate measurements of 16 seconds each are taken.
  • 4 measurements are in the same horizontal plane as the tool one meter above the terrazzo floor. The measurements are taken 90 degrees apart with respect to the tested tool’s mass center. Direction of exhaust is biased 45 degrees to the first and fourth measurement.
  • Fifth measurement is taken one meter directly above the tested tool’s center of mass.
  • All 5 measurements are logarithmically averaged.
  • An environmental correction factor is applied per ISO 15744 Annex C.
  • Most toolsare tested running free speed. Sanders are tested under load sanding on a 100 pound steel plate.

Vibration

Test Equipment: Bruel & Kjaer Type 4447 vibration meter, B&K 30552 Tri axial accelerometer

Calibration cycle: Yearly @ Certified lab

Test Specifics:

  • General for all tests
  • A calibrated tri axial and meter using hand arm weighting is used.
  • The accelerometer is mounted by a clip or bracket with the accelerometer held on three sides.
  • If there is and aux. side handle, five measurements in each position are taken by one operator. If there is greater than 30% difference in the results, only the highest position is tested.
  • Results are reported in m/s² and an uncertainty is reported.
  • Tools are run with the accessories that are supplied with the tool.
  • Tools are run fully functional, lubricated and proper air pressure or voltage to the manufactures specifications.
  • No quick couples are used. A hose 3m in length is attached with a threaded fitting to the tool being tested.
  • Guide lines for vibration testing to ISO 20643
  • This is a general standard to test vibration on a tool that there is not an ISO 28927 standard for. Some of our methods tools like a Dynafile are a good example of when this standard is used.
  • Tool is tested to a scenario of the tool being used for a task that it was designed for. The test setup s noted within the vibration report of the tool.
  • The measurements will be taken where the operator’s hands will be while operating the tool where the index finger and thumb meet on the handle.
  • ISO 28927-1 (Angle & Vertical Grinders)
  • A specified test wheel is used for this testing. The wheel has 5 equal divisions marked, and the wheel is repositioned for each test.
  • A cable is attached to the tool and with a pulley system, weight is put on the other end of the cable to apply a downward feed force to lift the weights and push down on the tool.
  • If there is and aux. side handle, five measurements in each position are taken by one operator. If there is greater than 30% difference in the results, only the highest position is tested.
  • Location of accelerometers is dictated by the standard.
  • ISO 28927-3 (Rotary and orbital sanders)
  • 180 Grit paper is used for this testing.
  • A specified downward feed force is used testing to this standard.
  • Tests are performed on a steel plate.
  • If tool has more than one mode (Dynalock) it is tested in both modes and both modes are reported.
  • Location of accelerometers is dictated by the standard.
  • If the tool is designed to use with one hand it is tested with one hand.
  • ISO 28927-4 (Straight Grinders)
  • Cable, Pulley and weights are specified for the downward feed force for this test.
  • Wheel geometry is specified in ISO 28927-4.
  • Five equal divisions are marked @ 72°on the wheel. Wheel is repositioned for each test.
  • Location of mounting the accelerometer is specified to the standard.
  • ISO 28927-5 (Drills)
  • Location of mounting the accelerometer is specified in the standard.
  • Drill size is specified by standard by the speed of the drill.
  • Feed force is specified by the speed of the drill.
  • Material is specified in the standard as well as how it is fixtured
  • Measuring test time is a minimum of 8 seconds
  • Predrilled holes and center drilled holes prior to drill test are described in this standard.
  • ISO 28927-8 (Saws Polishing and filing machines)
  • ISO 28927-8 Dictates the location of the accelerometer.
  • Saws, polishers and files are tested with specified materials and feed forces.
  • Time duration not less than 8 seconds.
  • ISO 28927-12 (Die Grinders)
  • Standard specifies the size and type of accessory to be installed in the tool collet.
  • Standard dictates size and type of steel work piece to be used as well as operator feed force.
  • Time duration not less than 16 seconds.
