Wrestling -- Cara Smith

The Wrestling program’s regular season concluded with an exciting dual meet against Hunterdon county rival Voorhees High School. The match was held at Hunterdon Central during the Region V duals due to previous scheduled dates being cancelled due to weather. Del Val won after trailing by 1 point going into the last match. An overtime win by sophomore Dylan Uderman gave the Terriers the win and improved their record to 13-4.

In another exciting match late in January, the Terriers beat Lenape Valley 32-28 in front of their fans on Senior Night. The Patriots came into the match unbeaten and ranked #20 in the state by NJ.com. Cory Lightner was named lehighvalleylive wrestler of the week following that match. The team recognized 4 seniors and their parents that evening: Ryan Erwin, Cory Lightner, Brock Houser & Matt Powell.

The Pre-Varsity squad competed in Somerville at the Skyland Conference JV Tournament in early February. Their last competition of the season was February 14th, when they traveled to Raritan High School to compete in the Rocket Invitational.

Del Val was the #1 seed for the Sectionals and had a first round bye. They hosted Rahway in the Semi-finals and won 45-21. Two days later they hosted #2 seed Raritan High School in the Sectionals Final. They won 31-30. It was the 15th overall Sectional title for Del Val but the first since 2006 and the first for Coach Fitz. Unfortunately, they lost in the State Group II Semifinals held in Trenton against Lenape Valley.

With the team portion completed, the wrestlers turned their attention to the individual events. The Districts were held at Hunterdon Central High School on 2/21. Nine wrestlers competing in the 14 weight classes were able to move on to the Regions by finishing in 4th place or higher. Cory Lightner and Kyle Schlittler were both District 17 Champions and in doing so became the 99th and 100th district champions in Del Val’s wrestling history. The Region V Tournament was held Feb 23-28th at Hunterdon Central. Matt Kolonia and Kyle Schlittler took 4th place in Regions. Ryan Erwin took third place which earned him the chance to compete at the NJ State Championships held this past weekend in Atlantic City. While he wrestled hard, Ryan was unable to earn a spot on the podium in AC.

The team will hold an end of year banquet March 20th at the Milford Firehouse.

The annual Del Val Wrestling Foundation Raffle will be held this year April 11th at the Milford Firehouse. Tickets are on sale for $20 each with cash prizes. See Coach Fitz for tickets.
