CLASS of 2010 GRADUATION INFORMATION

Dear Students and Parents of the John F. Kennedy High School Class of 2010,

Seniors, I am sure you can feel the excitement as the time is nearing quickly – on June 7, 2010, you will have achieved another milestone in your young life. Although many of you and your parents have eagerly anticipated this day for the last four years, there will be mixed emotions of joy of what the future holds and sadness of moving on to the next stage of life.

The following information should help you plan for the next several weeks as your student participates in all of the exciting activities their class officers have planned for them. PLEASE read all of the information and pay particular attention to all deadlines.

GRADUATION INFORMATION

-Monday, June 7, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at D.A.R. Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C.(18th and D Streets, N.W.)

-Graduates report by 6:00 p.m.

-Classes will not be held for students of John F. Kennedy High School on graduation day.

-Parents/Guests should plan on arriving early so that they will be there when the doors open at 6:30 p.m.

-EVERYONE ATTENDING GRADUATION MUST HAVE A TICKET.

-The Principal will address the audience and read a decorum statement at 6:50 p.m.

-Doors to the public will be closed at 7:00 p.m. and the lobby cleared for graduates.

-Doors will reopen after the procession has ended; NO seating on the main floor after the processional.

TRANSPORTATION / PARKING

-Daytime parking on the street during the week is somewhat difficult (metered).

- Arrangements have been made with George Washington U. to permit us to use their parking facilities (on a space-available basis). The two visitor locations are the Marvin Center Garage on H Street, NW, between 21st and 22nd Streets; and the University Parking Garage, entrance on I Street Between 22nd and 23rd Streets.

-There are other parking garages in the area, but please remember that parking is NOT free.

-Metro is very convenient. For directions call 202-637-7000.

-We are also providing buses to graduation. (See attached letter regarding fee and departure time.)

INFORMATION FOR THE HANDICAPPED

A doorman/ticket taker and security officer will be stationed at the D Street entrance of D.A.R. Constitution Hall for the convenience of all patrons with disabilities who arrive by vehicle or use the driveway to avoid the front steps.

-Students requiring handicapped seating for parents/guests should email or leave a phone message for Mr. Ekelund at 301-929-2100, as soon as possible.

-No wheelchairs are permitted in the aisles.

-Seeing eye dogs are permitted to accompany the owner and will be permitted under the seat or at the owner’s feet.

SIGNING AND LANGUAGE INTERPRETATION

Individuals who need sign language interpretation or any other special assistance to participate in the graduation exercises should contact the Office of Interpreter Requesting Services at 301-517-5539, voice, or TTY Sorenson video phone. Please give as much notice as possible to enable staff to provide the accommodation requested. Interpreter services can be submitted on the website at

GRADUATION REHEARSAL

All graduates must attend rehearsal on Thursday, June 3 and Friday, June 4, 2010at 7:30 am in order to participate in graduation. There are no exceptions. Students will receive their tickets and their cap and gown at the end of graduation rehearsal on Friday, June 4, 2010.

GRADUATION CEREMONY EXPECTATIONS

Seniors must be in the processional line in order to participate in the ceremony. Seniors are reminded to wear appropriate attire, since this is a formal affair.

BOYS: 1. Wrinkle-free green academic robe

  1. Green mortarboard (cap) with tassel (on left)
  2. Long dress pants
  3. Dress shoes with socks
  4. White shirt with collar and tie
  5. Jewelry should not be worn on outside of academic robe

GIRLS: 1. Wrinkle-free gold academic robe

  1. Gold mortarboard (cap) with tassel (on left)
  2. Dress or skirt and blouse (light colors are preferable)
  3. Dress shoes with stockings

No jeans, tennis shoes, etc. will be permitted. This is a special event and everyone is expected to dress accordingly.

PROPER BEHAVIOR FOR GRADUATION. The GRADUATES will be briefed at graduation rehearsal about proper behavior. Any graduate who believes that he/she has the right to behave in an inappropriate manner will be escorted from the hall and will not participate in the rest of the ceremony. He/she will receive his/her diploma at a later time.

PARENTS are reminded that they, too, are attending a formal, dignified event. We appreciate your enthusiasm for your child’s achievements. We ask that you REFRAIN from yelling to graduates as they march in or walk across the stage. Remember you are not the only person to have a child graduating. Please respect others around you as well.

Please do NOT bring balloons as Security at D.A.R. Constitution Hall will not permit them in the hall. Also, remember to switch off your cell phone once the ceremony begins.

TICKETS FOR GRADUATION

Tickets for graduation will be distributed to each graduate at graduation rehearsal. No one is allowed to pick up tickets for his/her friends. Each graduate will receive 7 tickets. We realize that some graduates have more than sevenpeople to invite while others have fewer people. D.A.R. Constitution Hall holds approximately 3,000 guests. People with tickets will be admitted first. At 7:00 p.m. the processional will begin, and when it is over, any persons wanting to come in may do so if seating is available.(See attached for requesting extra tickets) PLEASE DON’T CALL ABOUT OBTAINING EXTRA TICKETS.

SENIOR PROM

The Senior Prom will be held on Friday, May 21, 2010 from 8:00 p.m. until 12:00 midnight at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, on 1615 H Street, NW Washington, DC 20062-2000. The tickets are $55.00 per person. Tickets will be sold at lunch during the weeks of Monday, May 10 – Thursday, May 20, 2010.All obligations must be satisfied or cleared prior to purchasing tickets.

POST PROM PARTY

The Post-Prom Party will be held from 12:00 a.m. until 5:00 a.m. at John F. Kennedy High School in the Gym and Cafeteria. We are looking for parents to help out with this activity. Students will not be permitted to enter after 1:30 a.m.

Cap & Gowns: Make sure that your Cap & Gown fits and is pressed with a cool iron.

Dear Class of 2010 Student, Parent / Guardian,

As you know this year’s commencement exercises is on Monday, June 7, 2010 @ 7:00 p.m. at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, DC. Each graduating senior is allotted 7 tickets. However, in the event that your family needs more tickets, please complete the attached form and returnto the main office, by 12:00 P.M. on Friday, May 21, 2010 to allow us to try to accommodate your needs as well as those requests by others.

All requests will be addressed immediately and we ask that you inquire about your requestbetween 1:00 and 3:30 on Friday, May 28. 2010. All additional tickets will distributed with the original 7 tickets at rehearsal on June 4, 2010. Please know that all visitors requiring their own seat will need a ticket for the ceremony. We wish to accommodate all requests, but can only distribute the tickets that we have been provided, so it is imperative to get your requests in as soon as possible as there is still a maximum number of tickets that can be distributed for safety reasons.

We eagerly look forward to the graduation ceremony. All graduates must be at DAR by 6:00 P.M. for the 7:00 P.M. graduation. We need every minute of the one-hour preparation time to get students in line and review all procedures. All graduating seniors must wear their John F. Kennedy HS graduation gown, which should be pressed with a cool iron. All female graduates are asked to wear white or pastel clothing below their gowns with white shoes. Male graduates are expected to wear white shirts and a dark colored tie with black or dark colored pants and black shoes. Please remember that this is a once in a life time occasion and that jeans and sneakers are not appropriate.
