Duties & Responsibilities

Background

Each Region of Special Olympics Great Britain is led by a voluntary Regional Steering Group. This group of individuals represent stakeholders from within the Region and regularly meet to discuss activity and developments, but who also vote to agree on how resources are allocated to Special Olympics activity. The Steering Group is responsible for discussing, agreeing (by vote) and co-ordinating:

  • Regional Competition Calendars for all levels of competition (local, regional, national, international)
  • Administration and Membership of the Steering Group
  • Regular Meetings and Communication
  • Finance
  • Branding
  • Relationships
  • Policies and Governance Agreements

The Region annually accredits to Special Olympics GB and in doing so, its Steering Group adopts a Governance Agreement that outlines the expectations of the Region and the support available from Special Olympics GB. One of the expectations is the appointment of 4 key roles within the Regional Steering Group, alongside any other roles the Region feel are required. These 4 key roles include:

  1. Main Contact
  2. Finance Officer
  3. 2x Competition Coordinators

The Regions Steering Group may appoint any other roles deemed necessary. Such roles could be (but are not limited to):

Volunteer Coordinator – Region (England)

Duties & Responsibilities

The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that volunteer recruitment requests made by the Regional Steering Group and / or any it’s Sub-Groups are actioned, to support the running of Regional competition and activity.

The Volunteer Coordinator ensures that:

  • such requests are role specific to aid the recruitment of volunteers
  • all volunteers with a Regional role (including Regional events) complete the Special Olympics GB Volunteer Registration Process in full
  • all volunteers are deployed appropriately, valued and recognised for their time and contribution

The Volunteer Coordinator will coordinate a list of volunteer recruitment contacts from across the Region, with support from National Office where requested, to include corporate sponsors, sports clubs, schools and colleges, local sports partnerships, large businesses and other voluntary organisations (e.g. Lions, YMCA, etc).

The Volunteer Coordinator must also be an active member of the Regional Steering Group, contributing to discussions and attending meetings

Person Specification

Essential criteria

The candidate must:

  • fully endorse the mission and philosophy of Special Olympics
  • be committed to supporting a positive experience for all Special Olympics members (athletes, Unified Partners, volunteers) in the Region
  • be a minimum of 18 years of age and be able to complete the Special Olympics GB volunteer registration process in full
  • be able to coordinate and collate sometimes complex information, from a variety of sources
  • be highly organised
  • be able to demonstrate leadership qualities and the ability to foster a spirit of teamwork.
  • have experience of working within both short and long term timescales, often without supervision
  • have the ability to be flexible with the completion of tasks

Desirable criteria

The candidate could have:

  • experience of managing small budgets
  • experience of working with individuals with an intellectual (learning) disability
  • experience of working with volunteers
  • experience of working in the sports sector

Notes

  • Although a beneficial experience to have, it is not essential the Volunteer Coordinator is elected from an accredited Special Olympics Club or Network
  • This role does not require completion of a Disclosure and Barring Service check, though the candidate may be required to provide a reference if requested by Special Olympics GB National Office or the Regional Steering Group
  • This is a voluntary, unpaid role. The Region or Special Olympics GB do not usually pay for volunteer travel expenses, though this may be considered in exceptional circumstances
  • Unless appointed by Special Olympics GB National Office, the Regional Steering Group are required to vote and elect new Steering Group members at least every two years, including the Volunteer Coordinator
