Homework #2

Due: June 23rd(Not accepted after 6:00pm)

1. What is the data transfer rate in bps of a signal that is encoded using phase modulation with 32 different phase angles and a baud rate of 4000?

2. A business in the city has offices across the street from each other. They want to transmit data between the two offices at speeds up to 100 Mbps. List all the types of media that would work in this situation with your number one choice listed first. What might keep each of these media from working properly?

3. A business in the city has two offices one mile apart. They want to transmit data between the two offices at speeds up to 100 Mbps. List all the types of media that would work in this situation with your number one choice listed first. What might keep each of these media from working properly?

4. You have been asked to recommend the type of wiring for a manufacturing building. The size of the building is 200 meters by 600 meters and houses large, heavy machinery. Approximately 100 devices in this building must be connected to a computer system. Each device in this building transmits data at 2 Mbps and sends a small packet of data every 2 to 3 seconds. Any cable recommended has to be suspended high overhead in a hard-to-reach location. What types of cable would you recommend? List your number one choice first.

5. Given that a satellite signal travels at the speed of light, exactly how long does it take for a signal to travel from the earth to a satellite in geosynchronous orbit and back to earth? How long does it take a signal to travel to and from a satellite in low earth orbit (assume 150 miles)? For full credit, show the calculations. (Recall: propagation time = distance / velocity)

6. For many years you have had a computer at home for all members of the family to use. Recently however, you added a second computer. You want to connect the two computers so they can share data and a nice quality printer. Unfortunately, one computer is on the main floor and the second one is upstairs. How are you going to connect the two computers? List as many possibilities as you can with the advantages and disadvantages of each. Consider both wired and wireless? If wired, what kind of wires? Where will the wires go? Use existing wiring? If wireless, what technology?
