Course Description: Dual Credit Spanish 1 emphasizes the use of Spanish for communication. The class will be conducted 90 % of the time in the target language. The course includes a review of basic concepts and continues with advanced grammar and usage. Emphasis is placed on the development of advanced proficiency in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and the acquisition of vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. The students will be asked to show not just what they know but what they can do with the language.

Goals: The goals of the Dual Credit Spanish 1 course are:

  1. To develop the ability to understand the spoken language both formally and in conversation.
  2. To develop the ability to speak with accuracy and fluency using appropriate pronunciation.
  3. To acquire vocabulary and grasp structure that enable the student to read newspaper and magazine articles, as well as literature with ease and accuracy
  4. To develop the ability to express ideas accurately and fluently in writing.

Expectations:

  1. To follow directions
  2. To turn in all work in a timely manner.
  3. To show respect to others.
  4. To bring materials to class every day (especially your notebook).
  5. To participate and cooperate in class
  6. To work together as a class
  7. To be in your seat when the bell rings.
  8. To have high expectations for yourself, your classmates and teacher.

Late Work: The general policy for Dual Credit Courses at NGHS is that students must submit their assignments at the required date and time. It is understood that on rare occasions, extenuating circumstances may occur that may warrant an extended due date.

Tutorials: These will be on as needed basis. I will be available every morning on class days.

Students should be able to:

-Read and understand materials in the target language.

-Answer knowledge level questions about a variety of written material.

-Answer some higher level questions about written material.

Listening comprehension:

-Answer knowledge questions on audio selections in various formats.

-Answer questions on topics of personal interest.

Speaking:

-Correctly pronounce the alphabet, vowel sound, vowel blends, problematic consonants, and use syllabification and stress and written accents.

-Students are expected to spell dictated words accurately.

-Students should be able to speak accurately.

Vocabulary topics will include: Vacations, shopping, locations and places, pastimes and sports, family, food, parties and family celebrations, health, nature, and technology.

Writing:

-Write loosely connected sentences into paragraphs.

-Write dialogues on topics of personal interest.

-Write descriptions and narratives.

Grammar; Review present tense briefly, practice present progressive, manipulative preterit and imperfect tenses, learn to form questions, learn about demonstrative adjectives and pronouns, and introduce subjunctive and its many uses.

Students in Dual Credit will NOT be exempt from 1st semester finals, 2nd semester final will be a project. The last date to drop the class is November 13th.
