Drumlanrig Woods, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire

Preliminary Details

Drumlanrig Woods: Drumlanrig Woods are part of the Buccleuch Estate at Drumlanrig Castle, near Thornhill in Dumfriesshire.

Travel and Parking: From the northwest use the A76 and follow signage from the minor road junction approx. 2 miles north of Carronbridge. From the northeast use the A702 and follow signage from a point approx. 2 miles northeast of Carronbridge to cross the A76 (take care at diagonal crossroads) to join other event traffic entering the estate. From the south use the A76 and travel through Thornhill (public toilets in Thornhill) and then through Carronbridge, continuing for another 2 miles to the crossroads which will be signed for Drumlanrig and for the Orienteering event. After leaving the A76 continue downhill to the bridge crossing the River Nith and turn right towards the main castle entrance.

At the castle esplanade turn left downhill to event parking on level ground adjacent to the adventure playground area. Assembly, Registration/Enquiries, Finish and Download will be adjacent to the parking area.

The castle will be open to the public. Event fees include the cost of parking. Please display the “O-Event 23 April” cut-off slip from the bottom of these details clearly in your windscreen on approach to the castle entrance to assist castle staff.

Please contact the Organiser if you are coming in a motor home or minibus.

Terrain: The terrain is fairly hilly mixed coniferous and deciduous woodland with some very large trees and a good network of paths and tracks. The forest has some very runnable sections, although patches have been thinned leaving some rougher ground with low vegetation in more open felled areas.

Courses will be standard SOL Long Distance for all classes.
