Drum Kit and Hand Drums

Veteran player and performer, with 25 years’ semi-pro experience playing rock-and-roll drum kit and Afro-Cuban tunes on congas, bongos, and timbales. Own a maple five-piece DW kit, vintage Valje congas, and LP timbales.

Performance History

Classical clarinetist, ages 10-18, Winnetka, Illinois. Played in marching band and concert band, New Trier High School East, 1968-71.

Principal drummer, Jan Hobson and Her Bad Review, Chicago, 1975-76. Played a vintage drum kit several tunes a week for this witty duo act that performed original numbers and hits from the 1920s through the 1940s.

Drummer, The Swing Sisters, Chicago, 1975-76. Played my own kit several times a week for this close-harmony female trio that performed covers of hits from the 1920s through the 1950s.

Percussionist (congas, bongos, timbales, shaker, bells) for Bahia, Whidbey Island, Wash., 1992-2000; and occasionally still sitting in. One of three percussionists making up this very popular six-piece Whidbey Island Latin jazz group, which performed frequently. Flute carried the melody and led the band, along with bass and keyboards. CD available.

Drummer and arranger. Force Majeure, Seattle, 2007. Helped lead the house band for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper, which won a musical competition that year.

Two-week music-study program in Havana and Matanzas, Cuba, with the late L.A.-based percussion instructor Chuck Silverman, Summer 2012.Studied and jammed with esteemed musicians, including folkloric giant Lali (Raul de la Caridad Gonzalez Brito) and timba great Piloto (Giraldo Piloto), of Klimax.Cited as having “most accurate clave in the class”by Piloto.
