Drug Screening and Background Check Information

Faculty and Students ON-SITE Clinical Experiences at Gwinnett Hospital System (GHS)

Requirements:

Prior to clinical placement at GHS, faculty and students are required to be pre-screened to document a negative drug screen result and a clear criminal background check as defined by GHS criteria. Once faculty has successfully cleared the GHS requirements, results will be valid throughout their services at GHS and if in accordance with their employing academic institution. However, when faculty changes employment to another academic institution drug and background screening will need to be redone.Students having once successfully cleared the GHS requirements will be valid throughout their clinical experience as a student and if in accordance with their academic institution. However, when students change to another academic institutions program drug and background screening will need to be redone.The following delineates the GHS prescreening criteria and acceptable prescreening methods:

GHS Drug Screen and Background Check Criteria

  • Drug Screen Criteria to include: Barbiturates, Benzodiazepine, Cocaine, THC, Amphetamines, and Opiates. Findings that will exclude student placement: any positive result unless the student/faculty has a physician’s documentation of need for the drug.
  • Criminal Background Check Criteria to include:
  • Social Security Number Verification
  • Current County of Residence
  • Criminal Search (7 years or up to 5 criminal searches)
  • Violent Sexual Offender and Predator Registry search
  • OIG List of Excluded Individuals/Entities
  • GSA List of Parties Excluded from Federal Programs
  • U.S. Treasury, Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC), List of Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) (U.S. Patriot Act)
  • Government Suspect List
  • Applicable State Exclusion List (Nationwide Health Care Fraud and Abuse Scan)
  • Employment verification for any student/faculty age 21 years or older

Methods available to meet GHS requirements:

  • Method A: GHS Reviews Screening Results

The Academic Institution (i.e. school) informs faculty/students of GHS drug screening and criminal background check requirements (listed above). The faculty member/student obtains a drug screen/criminal background check that meets the GHS drug screen and criminal background check criteria.(Preferred on-line provider is: The faculty member/student authorizes GHS to view the results. This authorization is granted by the faculty member/student on the drug screen and criminal background check authorization/release form on the company’s website. GHS makes a determination if the faculty member/student is clear for clinical placement at GHS. The Academic Institution does not review the results. Those students who clear this screening process are eligible to do their clinical experience at GHS. GHS Student Placement Coordinator will notify the Academic Institution’s representative of any failed screenings, should they occur. The Academic Institution notifies the ineligible faculty member/student that they are excluded from a clinical rotation at GHS.
