HOW TO SUBMIT ASSIGNMENTS USING DROPBOX IN ECS COMPUTER SYSTEMS

INTRODUCTION: In exploring different methods for electronic communication with my students, it has become necessary for me to no longer accept email as the mode for assignment submission in my classes. In consultation with the IT Staff they have suggested DROPBOX as a more convenient method. This idea of using dropbox for assignment is not new to you because I mentioned it on the first week of classes. This is something I did last semester and it worked well.

NOTE: IF YOU HAVE ALREADY SUBMITTED TO ME AN ASSIGNMENT BY EMAIL YOU MUST SUBMIT IT AGAIN IN THE DROPBOX.

ELECTRONIC DROP BOX

The College IT staff has created an electronic drop boxes for all my classes this Fall 2005 semester. They are located at:

\\voyager\lab\CPE\CPE185\dropbox

\\voyager\lab\CSC\CSC255\dropbox

\\voyager\lab\CSC\CSC196n\dropbox

As the instructor for the courses I have full access to the folders.

Students can write to the folder and see a listing of the contents, but they cannot see any of the contents.

Usually the student writes (or drops) their folder/file(s) in the specified

dropbox. There will be problems if I make folders for each student because their permissions would be different from mine. Consequently, I am making the requirement that each student creates a folder named after them (your last name followed by your first initial) within the appropriate dropbox so that there is no confusion between students. For example if you are in cpe185 class and your name is John Doe you must first create a directory called doej, place your file in it, and then drag the directory into \\voyager\lab\CPE\CPE185\dropbox . (Note: You will encounter problems in naming your directory if you create the directory initially in the drop box. ) Subsequently all your assignments submissions to me must be placed in the doej directory you created. Note that the filename must be according to the same format specified in the course syllabus – NO EXCEPTIONS.

  • Note1: Because I plan to use email as feedback to you, you must include your email address in EACH document you place in the dropbox.
  • Note2: You must create your folder in the appropriate dropbox as soon as possible. I will check it within 24 hours to see if you have done it. Do not wait until the time to submit an assignment before you do it.
  • Note3: IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU ACCESS THE DROPBOX ON CAMPUS BECAUSE IT IS MORE CONVENIENT FOR YOU. However, if you must access the dropbox from OFF CAMPUS, it is much more COMPLICATED and its success is not guaranteed. Here are the instructions to do so given by the College IT Staff.

HOW TO ACCESS THE DROPBOX FROM OFF CAMPUS – MORE COMPLICATED

As for connecting from off campus, students can:

1. Go to

2. Go to Computing Services

3. Go to Help Desk

4. Under "Help and How-To Files", download "ConnectingToECSResources.doc"

5. Make sure you have a VPN connection to campus before you map your drive to voyager this way.
