Each student must bring a parental signature, sent home on the first day, which gives permission for the student to drive in the program. Eachstudent must be at least 15 years old to start Driver Education andhave a learner permit. Students must be enrolled at MMHS. Landmark and UCAS students who live in the

MMHS boundaries may also takeDriver Education at MMHS.

2. ATTENDANCE: By STATE REQUIREMENT, the class will run for 27 hours and each student will be required to attend theclass for all 27 hours. Any hours missed will have to be made up before the student can pass the class. A student may make up two absences or 3 hours, (summer classes

only allow one absence or 3 hours). On the third absence, (second absence in the summer),

your student willhave to repeat the course and pay the $100.00 fee. Two tardies count as one

absence and eachtardywill require 45 minutes of classroom makeup. We will start on time each day.

One make up session will be taught. For those who need additional make up time, they will need to come

back during the first week of the next scheduled class.

If you come in late, it is your responsibility to make sure the roll is marked accordingly.

If a student is tardy or absent, they will receive a zero for that day’s quiz. For students who wereabsent,

any assignments that are due must be handed in by the next class period. It is your responsibility to find

out what you missed and get it turned in on time.

All assignments are due at the beginning of class. After that, they are considered late.

Late work will be assessed a 50% penalty and will only be accepted for one day after theduedate. All assignments must be turned in by the last day of each class.

Sleeping in class will not be tolerated. Those sleeping will be assessed a tardy.

Phones, hats, and electronics are not allowed in class. They will be taken and a parent will have tocome to class and pick them up.

3. READING: Each student will be issued a textbook and given a Utah Driver Handbook. Reading and studying these two bookswill enable the student to learn the concepts, rules, and laws more effectively.

4. WORKSHEETS and QUIZZES: Each student willcomplete a worksheet on each chapter fromthe textbook. There will also bequizzes given everyday that cover the previous day’smaterial. There will be a comprehensive quiz at the end of the course that covers the Utah Driver Handbook.

5. NOTES: Each student will be given a note packet and expected to takes notes during class lecture. The

notes should be neat and complete enough to help students prepare for the quizzes and assignments

given. The note packet will be turned in at the end of the course and will be graded on completeness.

6. OUTSIDE CLASS ASSIGNMENTS: There will be two outside class assignments. They are: an

intersection assignment and a maintenance assignment. Each one must be completed on time, signed

by a parent, and done specifically as stated by the teacher. NOT TURNING IN EITHER OF THESE

ASSIGNMENTS WILL CONSTITUTE AN AUTOMATIC “Fail” FOR THE CLASSROOM.

7. GRADING: The driver education program is a pass/fail program. A student must attain 70%

of the total points available in the class. The student must also show competence on the driving range and driving on public roads. Six hours of student observation time in the driver’s education car is also required. All classroom work must be turned in by the end of the course.

8. STATE TESTING: Each student will take his/her state road test with their driving instructor. The driving

test will be given at the end of the 3rd road driving session. He/she must have a score of twenty or lower. If the driver does not obey traffic laws, or causes an accident, he/she will automatically fail the road test. If the student fails the driving test, he/she will have the option of retaking the driving skills test again at MMHS. A student can take the driving skills test two times. After two failed attempts, they will be referred to the Driver License Division

9. OPTIONS FOR FAILING: Students not meeting the minimum requirements will have one

more chance at MMHS to pass driver education. This requires starting over from the beginning, including the $100.00 fee. A student who does not pass a second time must take the class elsewhere, such as a professional driving school.

10. DRIVING RANGE: You must meet at your appointed time. Driving range hours are not flexible. Missed driving range hours must be made up at a cost of $19/hour missed. Range driving will take 12 hours, two hours per day for six days. Individual driving days will follow completion of the range driving.

Students will go out on the road 3 times.

We make every effort, through training, instruction, and supervision to keep your student safe. Occasionally, accidents happen out on the range. If the accident is a result of horseplay, using a phone, ignoring instructions or safety procedures, etc., the student, (driver and/or passenger), and/or their parents/legal guardian will be financially responsible for any and all damages.

11. PARENT/LEGAL GUARDIAN By signing the parent/legal guardian form, the parent/legal guardian of

the student and the student certify that they understand, acknowledge, and agree:

 With all the information, terms, and conditions contained in this form and all other

rules and general information provided by the driver education instructor.

 That driver education is a privilege and not a right.

 That the parent/legal guardian and the student will accept financial responsibility for

any and all damages to the real and personal property interests of Nebo School District when the student’s intentional act(s) (inattention, horseplay, neglect of any rule, etc.) cause or contribute to the damage of any property interest of the Nebo School District. In such cases, a student may also be subject to additional consequences, such as removal from the driver education program.

11. DRIVING SCHEDULE: After the driving range is complete, you will sign up for individual driving times with an instructor. Once you have committed yourself to a driving schedule, you willberequired to meet at your appointed time. If you must miss, let your instructor know in advance, so he can arrange an alternate schedule. Instructors may not drive students alone. You will be paired with one or more driving partners. If you miss your scheduled time without notifying the instructor, you will also need to pay $38.00 – for the two hours of time that you wasted for the instructor and your driving partner.

It normally takes 3-4 weeks to complete all of the driving, from when range driving begins.

12. CERTIFICATES: Students will be given a certificate when they successfully complete theentire course, including driving. Certificates are not required at the DLD in order toobtain a license. They are only given to you as a courtesy. All driving and classroom records are now tracked online through the DLD.

This Driver Education course is very demanding. There will be assignments and quizzes every day. You will spend several hours each day working on assignments. However, success is possible for those who seriously give an honest and dedicated effort.
