Drill Name:_2-3-1 Motion Offense OverviewDrill Theme:_Even up offense

Time Needed:______Field Positions:__Attack, Mid__ Skill Level:__Basic/Intermediate______

Objective:

Description of Offensive Formation

The motion offense works in triangles formed by the middies andanother by the attack. The attack and middie triangles rotate in opposite directions when the ball is being carried. The motion keeps the defense adjusting and creates scoring opportunities. A1 and A3 need to be 5 yards above GLE so thatwhen their man slides, they are in good position to shoot. M2is about5‐8 yards above goal.

Key Principles for success:

  1. Triangles do not rotate on a pass to an adjacent player,
  2. Both triangles rotate when ball carrier is moving/dodging to a new point on their triangle.
  3. Ball carrier direction determines the direction of the whole rotation
  4. Dodges only take place from A2, M1 and M3 positions
  5. Attack and middie triangles rotate in opposite directions as if they were “fixed on a string”
  6. Must have at least 2 passes in same direction before a dodge (carry), triggering a rotation.
  7. Unless feeding for a shot, passes are made to adjacent player around outside perimeter
  8. Creating space favors the offense. Holding ball for too much time favors defense

Variations:

Bad Habbits: Everyone needs to move on the rotation to keep defense spread out. Must have 2 passes before a dodge, otherwise defense has not shifted.

Play Name:_Bocklet Right or Bitter Left Drill Theme:_2-3-1 Set Play R/L Attack Dodge

Time Needed:______Field Positions:__Attack, Mid __ Skill Level:__Basic/Intermediate______

Objective:

Description of Offensive Formation

Ball starts with M3. M3 Passes to A3 (pass 1). A3 Passes to A2 (Pass 2). Once A2 gets the ball he immediately dodges toward the A1 position. A1 clears through the crease and the middies rotate in a clockwise rotation.

Key Principles for success:

  1. A2 has several options as he dodges his man.
  2. If dodge is successful he can shoot
  3. If defensive slide prevents shot, he can pass to M3 moving to high right side or pass back to X

Variations:

This same play could be run from the opposite direction starting with M1. M1 would pass to A1 followed by a pass to A2 at X. A2 would then dodge toward the position of A3, triggering a rotation by the attack and middies that is opposite of the above diagram.

Bad Habbits: Don’t force the shot. Maintain space and possession.

Play Name:_ Bratton Right or Thompson Left Drill Theme:_2-3-1 Set Play R/L Middie Dodge

Time Needed:______Field Positions:__Attack, Mid __ Skill Level:__Basic/Intermediate______

Objective:

Description of Offensive Formation

Ball starts at “X”(A2). A2 Passes to A1 (pass 1). A1 Passes to M1 (Pass 2), then M1 to M3. Once M3 gets the ball he immediately dodges toward the M2 position, looking for a shot. As M3 moves with the ball, both the attack and middies rotate to open a lane for a shot from M1. If the shot is not there, M3 can dump to A2 moving to the left point or M1 moving to the top left position.

Key Principles for success:

  1. M has several options as he dodges his man.
  2. If dodge is successful he can shoot
  3. If defensive slide prevents shot, he can pass to A2or M1 (adjacent players).

Variations:

This same play could be run from the opposite direction starting again with A2, but passing to the left. A2 would pass to A3 followed by a pass to M3 then M1. M1 would then dodge toward the position of M2, triggering a rotation by the attack and middies that is opposite of the above diagram.

Bad Habbits: Don’t force the shot. Maintain space and possession.
