Drawing and Painting One

Scope and Sequence

Drawing and Painting One offers sophomores through seniors Honors 1 credit in a course designed to build on the skills that were mastered in Introduction to Drawing and Painting. The student will experience a variety of media and will incorporate the design principles into their artwork while refining their composition and creativity skills.

Units

  1. Deepening understanding of the Elements and Principles. (4 days)
  2. Students will review and define the elements of art.
  3. Students will review and study the principles of design as guidelines for creating successful compositions.
  4. Students will practice utilizing the elements and principles in sketchbook.
  5. Students will learn to critique of their own work and learn to critique famous works using the elements and principles as talking points.

Outcomes; 2 and 5

  1. Contour line drawings and developing watercolor (4 days)
  2. Students will practice drawing from a live model.
  3. Students will learn and practice the variety of watercolor techniques.
  4. Students will combine the two skills along with their knowledge of the elements and Principles to create a work thatis a combination of contour line drawing and watercolor painting.
  5. Students will participate in a critique of the classes’ art work.

  1. Monochromatic Self Portrait – acrylic paint (6 Days)
  2. Students will learn how portraits can portray a message.
  3. Students will learn how portraiture has changed throughout history.
  4. Student will learn how compositional choices along with the elements and principles can be used in a work to portray mood.
  5. Students will choose a portrait or self-portrait to take, possible alter digitally and then paint using a limited or monochromatic pallet.

  1. Pop Art Printmaking (8 days)
  2. Students will study pop art and the prominent artists of the period.
  3. Students will study printmaking and the history or printmaking.
  4. Students will choose a subject matter, animal or human face or still life.
  5. Students will create a 3 color drawing of this image.
  6. Students will create a reduction print of their image and then use the black outline to create multiple prints on a variety of backgrounds.
  7. Students will critique the classes work and their own and reflect on the success of the project.

  1. Pencil Drawing with Cartoon Characters (7 Days)
  2. Student will practice drawing and shading skills, using a viewfinder, perspective, and proportion.
  3. Students will study cartooning and practice drawing cartoon characters.
  4. Students will learn about the proportions of the human body.
  5. Students will understand the practice uses of cartooning such as media applications.
  6. Students will practice making strong compositional choices combined with creativity to create a strong composition.
  7. Students will use pencils, colored pencil and possibly other media to create a finished composition of a realistic drawing of their hand combined with a cartoon character from their imagination.
  8. Students will critique their work.

  1. Watercolor Sunsets With cut paper silhouettes (4 Days)
  2. Student will learn about the Serengeti Desert
  3. Students will study watercolor painting and practice painting sunsets.
  4. Students will define silhouette
  5. Students will create a composition using watercolor painting and cut paper silhouettes (or black paint) that portrays life in the desert. This work will focus on color, composition and contrast.

Outcomes; 1,3, and 4

  1. Colored pencil eye drawings (5 Days)
  2. Students will discuss extreme perspective in art compositions and why they may be used.
  3. Student will learn how to effectively us colored pencils to match color, blend and apply an image to the page.
  4. Students will choose a set of eyes to photograph and draw.
  5. Students will draw the eyes from a photograph using a grid system.
  6. Students will complete the work by making the eyes as realistic as possible with the colored pencils.
  7. Students will assess their own artwork and their mastery of this skill.

  1. Students will review their work as a whole and reflect on their growth, strength and struggles though the semester.
