SECTION 11138

REAR PROJECTION SCREENS

***** Draper manufactures four types of rear projection screen:

Cinescreen - A diffusion type rear projection screen consisting of a transparent substrate with a permanently bonded optical coating which diffuses and distributes projected light. The coating is an emulsion of microscopic particles, each functioning as a refractive lens.

IRUS - Infinite Resolution Uniformity Screen - An acrylic rear projection screen designed for use with single lens, high resolution technology capable of providing optimum displays with uniform, crisp, ultra-fine images.

DiamondScreen - Cast acrylic high intensity screen with an integral lens system and embedded diffusion material. The brightness of DiamondScreens is up to three times that of conventional rear projection screens.

Vortex - Cast acrylic, high intensity screen with an integral lens system and embedded diffusion material. Since diffusion material is embedded, it cannot be scratched or damaged. Vortex is designed for use with single lens projectors without moiré patterns. The projected light is collimated then diffused evenly, allowing for use in videowalls and rooms with tiered seating patterns.

This section also covers four types of aluminum frames used for rear projection screens and three systems for video walls. A video wall is a custom designed, framed array of rear projection screens used in command centers, control rooms, and other facilities where detailed visual information is displayed. Video walls are typically used in conjunction with rear projector support framing systems specified in SECTION 11139 - REAR PROJECTION SYSTEMS.

There are various options for substrate material, formulation of optical coating, tint of optical coating, surface treatments, sizes, method of installation, framing, and frame finish. Refer to Draper product literature for availability of options, standard sizes, and guidelines for selection of screen type. Various options are listed in this specification section and the specifier will need to select the appropriate options, verify their availability, and delete non-applicable options.

B.Substrate: Clear [1/4 inch] [3/8 inch] [1/2 inch] [6 mm] [10 mm] [13 mm] thick select quality [plate or float glass; Cineglass] [clear acrylic; Cineplex] as manufactured by Draper, Inc.

***** Draper, Inc. offers the following six optical coatings for Cinescreen rear projection screens. Selection of optical coating is influenced by projector light output, audience pattern, screen aspect ratio, and ambient light level in audience area. Refer to Draper product literature for assistance in selection of appropriate optical coating. Coatings are formulated to provide varying levels of brightness over different viewing angles. Screen surfaces are rated according to gain which is a measure of brightness relative to a block of magnesium carbonate which serves as the standard for 1.0 gain. A higher gain indicates an increase in brightness. Peak gain is measured directly in front of the screen at 0 degrees viewing angle. Gain will decrease with an increase in viewing angle.

Cine 101.0 peak gain and half-gain at 50 degrees.

Cine 131.3 peak gain and half-gain at 33 degrees.

Cine 151.5 peak gain and half-gain at 31 degrees.

Cine 181.8 peak gain and half-gain at 28 degrees.

Cine 202.0 peak gain and half-gain at 27 degrees.

Cine 252.5 peak gain and half-gain at 25 degrees. *****

C.Optical coating: Emulsion of microscopic particles each functioning as a refractive lens with peak gain at 0 degree viewing angle of [_____] and [_____] gain at 50 degrees; [Cine 10] [Cine 13] [Cine 15] [Cine 18] [Cine 20] [Cine 25] as manufactured by Draper, Inc.

***** All Draper optical coatings are available with three optical tints:

Cine HC - High contrast dark grey tint.

Cine NG - Medium grey tint normal contrast tint.

Cine W - Neutral white tint.

Selection of optical tint is influenced by type of projector, contrast and legibility of projected image, ambient light level in audience area, acceptable color when screen is not in use, and use of laser pointers. Refer to Draper product literature for assistance in selection of appropriate optical tint.

D.Optical tint: Provide modifier for optical coating to enhance image contrast and color value; [Cine HC - Dark Grey Tint] [Cine NG - Medium Grey Tint] [Cine W - Neutral White Tint] as manufactured by Draper, Inc.

***** Cinescreen is typically installed with coated side toward audience since optical coating controls glare. However, coating is vulnerable to accidents and abuse and can be damaged by pointer, pencils, pens, fingernails, grease, oil, chalk, markers, and improper cleaning. Draper ArmorKote is applied over optical coating to protect surface from abrasion, abuse, and solvents. Include the following paragraph if protective coating is required. *****

E.Protective coating: Apply special transparent coating over optical coating to provide resistance to solvents, abrasion, grease, oil, water-based markers, chalk, and normal impact from fingernails, pointers, pencils, and pens; ArmorKote as manufactured by Draper, Inc.

***** If Cinescreen is to be installed with optical coating placed toward rear projector, Draper NonGlare special coating can be applied to side of screen without optical coating to reduce glare from audience side. Include the following paragraph if non-glare coating is required. *****

F.Non-glare coating: Apply special transparent coating to side of screen without optical coating to reduce glare from audience side; NonGlare as manufactured by Draper, Inc.

***** Appropriate screen size is determined by dimensions of audience area, ceiling height, and use. Draper provides both standard and custom sizes for rear projection screens.
