Guidelines and Application Form

Cure Kids’ mission is “to improve the health of children through research and its outcomes”.

The Cure Kids Innovation Seed Fund contributes to this mission by supporting the early stage investigation ofinnovative research ideas which successfully demonstrate the potential to improve the understanding, diagnosis, therapy, and prevention of paediatric health conditions.

Applications for up to $50,000 + GSTwill be considered. Applications for ‘add-ons’ to existing research will not be considered, as proposals must be independently innovative. It is anticipated that Innovation Seed Fund projects will be completed in the 12 months following award.

Pilot studies investigating basic, translationalor clinical research will be considered with applicants required to demonstrate what the potential outcomes of the study may mean for children suffering from the disease/condition or to the advancement of knowledge.

Value for money will be a significant consideration when assessing proposals. The Innovation Seed Fund will not support the salary costs of existing staff members within the research team. However, if justified, funding for new short-term contracts will be considered.

Proposals must be received by Cure Kidsno later than5pm on Monday, September 4, 2017.The application will then undergo a thorough review by the Cure Kids Medical & Scientific Advisory Committee.

Applicants will be advised of outcomes by mid-December 2017.

Application Guidelines

Your three page application should cover the following points:

(The title of your research project must be in plain English for a non-medical audience and must include the common name of the health condition you are researching and be no more than 30 words in length).

  1. Lay Summary

Please provide a summary of your project for a non-medical audience.Please briefly describe the importance of, or the magnitude of the problem including known relevant facts, particularly how many New Zealand children suffer from the condition.

Briefly describe the importance of, or the magnitude of the problem including known relevant facts, particularly how many New Zealand children suffer from it, and annual cost to New Zealand’s health system, if known.

What do you hope to achieve?

  1. Transformative nature of the research

Describe the issue being addressed by the research proposal. Describe the exploratory aspects of the proposal and how it challenges conventional understanding in the field. How will the proposal potentially lead to transformative or disruptive change and be paradigm shifting? The proposal is inclusive of clinical trials and pilot studies.

  1. Rationale and Approach

What is the logic behind your proposal? Explain your approach and methodology including power studies if appropriate. Preliminary evidence is not essential; however, you should describe the viability of your proposal. What can be achieved within the term of the grant? The proposal should not be for an idea for which there is significant supporting evidence, or is well developed enough to submit to the conventional Cure Kids full granting round.

Describe the potential for future research. If you are successful with your objectives, how will the research translate the results to have impact on the health condition in the long term?
