MARYLAND TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION

January 6, 2016

I. Call to order

The meeting of the Maryland Transportation Commission was held on Wednesday, January 6, at 10:30 a.m., in the Board Room of the Maryland Department of Transportation.

II. Roll Call

The following members were present:

Chairman Calderwood called the meeting to order at 10:35AM. Mr. Calderwood had the commission members re-introduce themselves to the group for the newer participants.

III. Dedication Considerations

Chairman Calderwood introduced four dedications to the commission for consideration. Commissioner Littrell distributed information on the Heroes Highway law passed in 2015, which included service members to the list of those eligible for dedications.

USMC SSGT James M. Malachowski, Liberty Reservoir Bridge at MD Route 140. Malachowski was born and raised in Carroll County and a graduate of North Carroll Senior High School. He was killed in action in Marjah, Afghanistan on Sunday, March 20, 2011. Members voted to recommend this dedication to the Secretary for approval.

Henry Highland Garnet, Part of MD Route 291. Born a slave in Kent County, Mr. Garnet became a prominent abolitionist, activist, minister, missionary, educator and diplomat. The members discussed the potential location of signs, agreeing the signs should be south of Chesterville. Members voted to recommend this dedication to the Secretary for approval.

USMC SGT David J. Smith, Jefferson Pike/Ballenger Creek Pike Bridge. Smith was born and raised in Frederick, MD and died on January 26, 2010, three days after supporting a combat operation in Helmand province, Afghanistan. Members voted to recommend this dedication to the Secretary for approval.

USMC Corporal William Kyle Ferrell, Catoctin Furnace Trail Bridge over US Route. Ferrell served in the USMC assigned to Camp David known formally at the Naval Support Facility in Thurmont, MD. He was killed on US Route 15 near Thurmont, MD on September 29, 2015 after being struck by a hit and run truck driver while he was helping a disabled motorist. The truck driver remains at large. Members voted to recommend this dedication to the Secretary for approval.

V. Adjournment

Hearing no other items of business, the Commission adjourned at 11:13AM until the next meeting on February 3, 2016 at MDOT HQ.
