1. Basic details of the post

Job title: Commercial and Duty Manager

Salary: £26,000

Holiday entitlement: 20 days plus Bank Holidays. Additional time off is given when major Jewish festivals fall on working days (up to 13 per year).

Hours: 38 hours per week over 7 days on a flexible rota basis including evening and weekend working.

Start date: As soon as possible

2. Responsibilities of the post

Reporting to the Head of Visitor Services, the Commercial and Duty Manageris responsible for the management and development of the commercial offer within the museum and will assume responsibility for driving commercial targets and grow levels of commercial income. This includes developing the café offer and setting and tracking financial targets for the shop, café, Gift Aid and driving venue-hire and the post holder will work closely with the Visitor Services Team to implement an agreed commercial strategy and will produce accurate financial reports for both the shop and café on weekly basis with the assistance of the Retail and Café Managers respectively.

As part of the Visitor Services team, the Commercial and Duty Manager will also act as Duty Manager and will therefore be expected to supervise the volunteers and the front of house on a flexible rota basis. They will also assume line management responsibility for the Café and Retail Managers.

The main aims of the post-holder is to increase commercial revenue of the shop, café, admissions and venue-hire by reviewing strategies for each area going forwards and working with the Head of Visitor Services to implement change and improvements where appropriate.

This post will suit a professional with a strong commercial background in catering, retail and/or hospitality in a public-facing role and is looking to take the next step in their career. Developing the café offer is initially a priority and we are particularly interested in hearing from individuals with catering or café management experience who understand the challenges of managing a café within a larger organization and can put their stamp on it.

Main areas of responsibility

  • To generate income by promoting the Museum as a venue for corporate/private hire and actively promoting bookings for the use of specific facilities, such as the auditorium, for external meetings and functions, when they are not required for museum use.
  • To develop existing commercial enterprises such as the shop and cafe, and to identify and develop further income generating opportunities.
  • To work closely with the Development Team to support the growth in membership and develop exciting offers for our Friends and donors across our commercial activities.
  • To look ahead at the museum’s exciting programme of exhibitions in 2017 and beyond and identify ways in which these might present commercial opportunities for hire, retail and catering.

Facility Hires

  • To take the lead in developing and promoting room hire at the museum, working closely with the Head of Visitor Services, Museum Administrator, Head of Marketing, PR and Communications and other staff as appropriate.

Catering

  • To monitor and review the operation of the café and catering provision, and to make recommendations as appropriate (e.g suppliers, menu etc), working closely with the Head of Visitor Services and the Café Manager.

Retail

  • Work with the Head of Visitor Services, Retail Manager and Head of Marketing, PR and Communications and other staff as appropriate in seeking ways to promote the shop.
  • Work with the Head of Visitor Services and Visitor Services Manager to encourage the volunteer team to deliver consistently high standard of customer service and maximise business development opportunities.
  • Assist in devising volunteer training sessions in the shop and promote up-to-date product knowledge.

General

  • Duty Management of the building and volunteers on a rota basis

3. Person specification

Essential

  • A proven track record in catering and/or retail management, ideally within a cultural enterprise such as a gallery or museum but will consider strong applications from other commercial contexts.
  • Experience in corporate hospitality (e.g. events and/or room hire)
  • Experience of creating a sales culture and driving sales
  • Experience of working with P&L accounts, budgeting and forecasting and of producing performance management reports
  • Be highly organised, resourceful and motivated, with the ability to generate new ideas for improving business
  • Sound operational expertise with demonstrable experience in developing procedures and strategies
  • Ability and confidence to negotiate with suppliers, clients and stakeholders
  • Positive hands-on attitude and a practical approach under pressure
  • Previous experience of managing an EPOS system

Desirable

  • Developing and/or managing a room-hire policy
  • Management experience (paid or voluntary staff)
  • Supervising or assisting at public/private events
  • Experience of working within a cultural organisation

Background

Central to the museum are its wide range of stimulating exhibitions, which, more recently, included hugely successful retrospectives on the artists Judith Kerr, Abram Games and R.B. Kitaj, and exhibitions about blood, football and men’s fashion. The recent football exhibition toured nationally and the Amy Winehouse exhibition is currently breaking box office records on its international tour. The museum's award-winning education programme reaches nearly twenty thousand school children each year, helping to foster an understanding of Jewish culture they otherwise wouldn’t have.

Wherever possible all vacancies will be advertised simultaneously internally and externally. Steps will be taken to ensure that knowledge of vacancies reaches underrepresented groups internally and externally.

Selection criteria (job description and employee specification) will be kept under constant review to ensure they are justifiable on non-discriminatory grounds as being essential for the effective performance of the job.
