Dear colleagues,
The Cardinal Green Office Program is helping to make our building more sustainable. One way we can accomplish this is to utilize BigFix Power Management to control our computer and monitor sleep settings. The Cardinal Green Office Program recommends that your computer monitor go to sleep after approximately 10 minutes of inactivity and your computer go to sleep after about 20 minutes of inactivity. If everyone on campus were to adjust to these settings, the university could save $180,000 per year in electricity costs!
Our department manages BigFix centrally. To adjust your individual settings, please contact [insert name] and ask to be switched to the “Stanford Super Green” setting to save the most energy. Less aggressive settings are also available—see the Sustainable Stanford How To Guide for details. You can also ask for your client dashboard to be enabled, which will allow you to manage your own BigFix settings and track your energy savings.
If you need to, you can always temporarily change your power management settings on your computer itself using the instructions below. BigFix will then automatically reinstate the energy-saving default settings overnight, so you don’t have to remember!
To adjust power settings directly on your computer:
● In Windows Vista and Windows 7, right-click on your desktop and click Personalize. Click Screen Saver and change your power settings to turn off your monitor after a short period of inactivity.
● In Windows XP, right-click on your desktop. Go to the Screen Saver tab and click the Powerbutton to set up a power scheme that turns off your monitor after a short period of inactivity.
● In Mac OS X, open the System Preferences and click Energy Saver in the Hardware section. Select a time that puts your display to sleep after a short period of inactivity.
Please reach out to Moira Hafer in the Office of Sustainability with questions. You can contact her at or 650-497-5471.
Sincerely,
